Our topic this term has been 'Children Now and Then'. During this topic we have been making comparisons between the lives of children now and the Victorian era across a broad range of subjects. We have also learnt about Queen Victoria and how the role of the Monarch has changed drastically over the years. Progressing from our Better World topic, we considered the changes in attitudes to pollution from the Victorian era to modern day and how although industrialisation allowed our country to be more productive, it created difficulties for the environment and the health of many. We further explored the lives of children by learning about the need for poor children to work (sometimes very dangerous jobs) during Victorian times, the very different schools they went to (mean teachers and classes of 80 pupils!), and the changes in toys (wooden and simple toys then to the colourful and sometimes electronic toys of today).

We learnt about different types of Victorian modes of transport, including the invention of the fuel powered car. Using this as inspiration, we designed a model car using a blueprint and then created the car using materials such as sticks and card.

We learnt about how behaviour was dealt with in schools in the past in comparison to now. We acted out the roles of teachers and students from the past and discussed whether we would prefer to attend school now or in the past. We also made dunce hats and completed work on the blackboards with chalk.

We recalled what we have learnt about Queen Victoria. We then created a sculpture using clay based on the Queen Victoria memorial. Finally, we appreciated our friends' art by saying what we liked about their work.

History
We took part in a Victorian workshop where we learned about games from the past, inventions that were created, and how poor Victorian children were treated when they went to workhouses instead of school. The children also learned about the philanthropist Thomas Barnado - a kind man who helped the poor children of the Victorian era.

Today we discussed the features and purpose of each landmark we saw on our recent walk. We then compiled this information into a fact file so that people may learn about each landmark. A factfile is simply a collection of information about a particular thing.
