Scavengers and Settlers
Year 2
Year 2
In this topic we learn all about the life of humans in prehistoric times.
Take a look below to see our amazing work and activities!
Educational Visit to Celtic Harmony
Year 2 went on an educational visit to Celtic Harmony in Brickendon. This was planned as an engaging entry to their new 'Scavengers and Settlers' topic. The children developed their knowledge about prehistory and how people survived during the Stone and Iron Ages.
The children foraged for food identifying poisonous mushrooms, traded goods, built Stone Age shelters, made soup and hunted animals. They also observed fire making and flint knapping demonstrations as well as experiencing life inside an Iron Age style roundhouse.
Instruction Writing
We learned how to wash a wooly mammoth and then created our own set of instructions for brushing the teeth of a sabre tooth tiger, using all of the essential instruction writing features: Bossy verbs, adverbs and time openers.
Iron Age Pottery
Our children researched and made some fantastic examples of Iron Age pottery using the pinch pot and coil techniques. They then added their own unique and effective designs.
Caves and Hillforts
We learnt about how shelters changed through the ages and made model caves and Iron Age hill forts using a range of Art and DT skills.
We created our caves, adding a cave painting reflecting life in prehistoric times.
We then researched, debated and planned where to build our hillforts.
Using our teamwork skills we formed the natural features of the hill and ditch using paper, tape and paint. Next, we constructed the buildings, fences and tools that could be found in a hillfort.
Weaving
We also learnt how to weave, using the gods-eye technique. Weaving was a very important skill during the Iron Age and was the beginning clothing and fashion as we know it!
Archaeologist Visit
During this topic we had a visit from a real-life archaeologist, Lewis. He told us all about his work invesigating the prehistoric times. As well as giving us artefacts to explore, such as some real Stone Age tools and an activity that showed how archaeologists have to carefully consider the layers of history that are underground.
Amazing homework projects!
