London: It's the Place to be

Year 6

CARNIVAL

We learnt about the beginning of the Notting Hill Carnival, its founders and their intentions to overcome racial hatred in London. Making our own carnival masks was a natural continuation!

THE CONTRIBUTION OF IMMIGRANTS

We made posters to celebrate the contributions of immigrants to modern British culture. Every one has a link to another family and a direct impact on our city.

COMING TO ENGLAND

We read the exciting story of Floella Benjamin, who came to the UK as a girl of 11 in 1961. She battled discrimination and racism to become a successful presenter and broadcaster.

BUILDING FUTURES PROJECT

During the Summer term, we spent two weeks working on a project with 15billionebp and Lend Lease, who are developing the nearby Millenium Mills site. We learned about careers in the building industry and worked to design and build our own community buildings for our local area.

We began by learning about drawing at scale during maths and learned about the use of ratios by designers, architects and engineers. This included learning about common symbols on architectural plans.

We received a brief for our buildings and sketched designs on whiteboards so that they could be discussed and altered within our groups.

We then drew plans and elevations at a scale of 1:100 - the same scale of our models.

Then it was time to measure - very carefully - and cut card for each of the floors and walls of our buildings. We had already planned what materials would be used to build these, and created budgets for their costs.
