Big Questions

Year 1

Our Big Question this year has been on careers. Our children concentrated on four key questions which allowed them to develop an inquisitive nature in relation to jobs in the future: What jobs could I do in the future? What jobs are most interesting? What jobs are most challenging? What would I like to be when I grow up?

In English, for our word of the week, pupils were taught the word ‘career’. Pupils were able to recognise this by looking at pictures of jobs from different professions. In addition to this, we have been learning all about our Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. We learnt interesting facts about him and then created notes when identifying facts about him. For grammar, we were taught to use question marks so it could support our writing where we wrote a letter to Sadiq Khan asking him about his career.

We have introduced our new topic ‘Big Questions’ today. This year we are introducing careers of the future, and asked children what they might want to be when they grow up. The children have learned about new jobs and careers such as an architect, sportsperson, designer, content creator, inventor and many more. The children played various games to better understand what was involved in each role and acted out the careers to their friends.

As part of our Big Questions Careers week, we have focused on what it is like to be a programmer. The children have been introduced to Scratch Jr to show them the early stages of coding. As programmers, the children were given a story about a blue cat that went to the beach and they had to code the programme to make the cat move in a way that fits the story. Later, the children were able to create and programme their own stories.
