A Better World

Year 3

The Promise

We read The Promise by Nicola Davies which continues our theme from Book Week about hope and sustainability. A young girl tries to steal a handbag but is made to make a promise before the bag is handed over. To her surprise when she opens the bag, the girl discovers nothing but acorns. The acorns are planted in a grey, polluted and colourless city lacking smiles and positivity. As trees grow, the girl is inspired to continue planting trees spreading the impact far and wide. This is a wonderful book about mental health and how the environment we are in directly impacts how we feel and interact with others.

DT

Our focus for the three weeks was about sustainable transport, pollution and the impact on the environment. We thought about our local area and what could make it even better. In DT we created sustainable cities that included electric car charging points and solar panels on buildings.

English

We used drama and role play to imagine life in a world  like in The Promise

Before using everything that we had learned about the environment to write letters to Sadiq Kahn suggesting ways that Newham and specifically, the West Silvertown area could be improved. We thought about improving air quality and the mental health of the community.
