Every day: Watch and join in with the set 1, 2 and 3 sounds videos and one of the speed read red and green words video everyday. (The set 1 video is optional at this stage, but it would still be good to practise at least once per week).
When reading the book, follow this daily timetable:
Monday: Read the introduction page and discuss the ideas/themes that it raises with your child. Practise the green and red words on the next page. There is no need to read the story today. NEW: Go over the vocabulary check on page 3 and discuss the meaning of the words listed.
Tuesday: Quick recap to check your child remembers what the story is about and they remember the meaning of the new vocabulary from yesterday. Re-read the green and red words. Read the story together for 5-10 mins (complete 2-3 times as a minimum).
Wednesday: Again, read the story for a similar length of time as yesterday. Then turn to the questions on the final page and work through the answers together. Challenge them to explain how they know answers or why they believe their answer is true. Feel free to ask more of your own questions about the story.
Thursday: Develop speed and fluency today by recapping the green and red words and challenging your child not to sound out the words you have practised together. Ask your child how the characters feel. Can they add that emotion to the way they read that part of the story? Writing challenge: can your child write some of the green and red words from the story? (You can choose how many, but keep this section to no more than 5 minutes).
Friday: Acting day! Can you act out the story with your child. Remember those emotions you discussed yesterday! Writing challenge: Choose a sentence from the story. Say it with your child 4-5 times (or until they can memorise it), then challenge them to write it.
All content on this page will be updated every Monday so a new book will appear each week.
As you know so many speed words now, I recommend using the last page of the story book you are reading and speed read the words in the grid as practise.
