Shooting the door opening scene was incredibly important for continuity because in the running scene he's just running in a straight line, I need to find away to have him get to the studio and it not affect continuity, we had clive running into the shot show it matched what he was doing previously, this was quite hard to shoot as i had to manually focus as auto wasnt working.
Dolly is playing the character of Liv, who is a performer, I couldn't get rostre to make a stage, so instead i used the seating in the space instead as its raised so looks like she's on stage on camera, I made sure to not get too much of the back ground. The clip to the side I purposely shot out of focus and manually focused it, i liked how it looked and felt that it could fit into my aesthetics nicely
This is the shot we tried where the camera wouldnt focus correctly on the subject,
This is the final scene, you can see that the shot is quite slow and there lots of just blank standing which i had to fix in post due to time restrictions. Due to the mask Freddie didn't have a-lot of visibility which led to him bumping into me, which in noticeable in the raw footage but in the edit it blends in with the crossfade
This clip shows why the crossfades were needed, as you can tell the playback at the beginning is incredibly laggy this is due to editing on a laptop.
The first hour of editing I laid out my clips in the order I wanted them to play in, Because I was putting clips of liv singing in-between the clips of Clive running, i needed to make sure that when it went back to the clips of Clive running that it wasn't repeating a segment in the last clip, as-well as not skipping to much of the running footage to make sure everything matched well with continuity.
When filming the end scene, I didn't get time to perfect the shot due to actors being late, the clip that I used moves quite slow and theres a bit out of focus that wasn't intended, I tried my best to fix these issues by cutting the unwanted sections out and using crossfades to blend the scenes, I also sped and slowed down the clips in some areas, for example i wanted the focus on livs photos to last longer so I slowed that clip down. These methods worked really well in getting as close to the result i wanted filming as possible, although its not a perfect fit I still like the outcome.
This clip demonstrates how I used opacity effect in premier pro to create the effect of liv fading in and out. Using keyframes I marked down where I wanted her to fade in, stay in and then fade out, I repeated this for other clips as-well.
This clip is recorded after colour grading, I had noticed that theres a line in the footage, this is happened because i moved the clip of liv to the side due to her blocking clive, and it looked aesthetically better this way. to fix this I created a mask laying out where i wanted livs clip to be, and the feathered it out to blend out the harsh line from where the footage ends.
for Livs clips I wanted a really exaggerated orange tone with purple/pink undertones to add to the ethereal style I wanted, because i wanted to change the whole colour of the shoot, I didn't feel the need to do any basic correction and moved straight to the creative colour section in lumiere colours. I started adding an adjustment layer over my clips this allowed me to compare what I was doing to my original clip. I kept this colour pallet for liv throughout, but adjusted the settings for each clip individually this is because the lighting may have changed in the clips so the adjustment layer wouldn't match for all.
I then used the faded film slider to add a more retro feel to the clips
I wanted the clips of Clive running to have a slightly different style to liv's clips until the last scene where he arrives to see her. I used a adjustment layer again and chose the same colour hues as the previous clip, I huge issue I had in this scene with Clive was a almost shiny purple highlight above his head.
This was a simple fix all i needed to was adjust the exposure, however doing this added more grain to my footage, there was alot to begin with due to filming in low light and with the colour grading, I had planned to remove this with after effect however i didnt have access to it on the laptop i borrowed.
It is important to note that these colour grading clips and methods were not used in my final project, this was due to how much noise was on the clip, which really affected the aesthetics, this would of been fixed in after effect however I dont have access to it for this project.
In this clip I am doing basic corrections to the shadows and white balance.
This is the export of that edit using that colour grading style, I did try to fix the noise in one of the clips using the mask method but it ended up just blurring the background even on its lowest setting. you can see in this edit how noise it is, and the end result of the colour-grading I felt didn't really contrast well against livs clips.
After watching the previous export, i really didn't like the end result, i felt the graininess really just took away from the aesthetic style of my film, so you can see in this clip that i went back to my original footage with a new adjustment layer. Before this part of editing i wanted my footage to have a slight purple bluish tone to contrast but still complement the orange clips of liv however the result didnt match how i thought it would look, so instead i decided to only slightly alter it to avoid alot of noise, then just turned up the temperature of the pick which gave it a slight orange warmth to it, i also turned up the saturation slightly to make his costume pop. The result complemented lives clips, but also could stand out on its own.
Here i was trying to fix the moments he went out of shot or there was alot of negative space, i tried to keep him in the middle of the from for the most part.
A huge error in my footage is freddies hair pocking out the mask, which really ruins the immersion of my character, unfortunly no matter where i cropped his hair could still be scene, and its a mistake i can learn from, next time when filming using masks as probs i will rather use a wig cap to slick hair down or use a actor with shorter hair.
I was having issues with one of the running clips being to dark, i tried fixing the issues previously with changing the exposure in editing but it create to much noise that i couldn't remove, instead i noticed that one of the running clips goes for just a little to long in the sequence so instead i splice the clip in half and replace the clip that was too dark.
