Information and news for parents from the
Blue Ridge Elementary Library and Makerspace!
What do we do in the library?
All students come once a week during their specials rotations.
Students can have up to two books checked out one time. If they are unable to check out that day, other books are available to read during the visit.
New: 3rd-5th graders can come in on any morning to check in/out books M-F 7:35- 8:00 if a new book is needed before their library day. (will open up to lower grades later this year)
Depending on the grade level, the usual library experience consists of checking out books, a read-aloud, story/author study, book, series or genre talk, library lessons, Makerspace activities, and technology lessons.
What is Makerspace?
Makerspace provides hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build, problem-solve, collaborate, and invent as they engage in STEAM activities and challenges. Most activities and challenges are often created based on an author, book, theme, or holiday. These are often school-wide collaborative projects. So far this year, students have participated in a Peter Reynolds author study with Dot Day, the Macy's Day Parade, and other Holidays Around the World.
There are many items that we still need to create a full makerspace for designing and making.
If you have these extra items around your house to donate to the library, we would greatly appreciate the materials!
--YARN (we have an upcoming project this month!)
--Crafting supplies (buttons, fabric, string, stickers, stamps, etc.)
--Building sets/pieces - Legos, Tinkertoys, Lincoln Logs, Keva planks, K'nex, blocks, etc.
--Hotwheels cars
--Clean cups, straws, paper plates
--Something not on the list, and you are unsure, please email me: suzanne.hart@brisd.net
