When is the registration deadline?
Deadline to register for the competition is Saturday October 3rd!
What time and where should I show up?
Lifters should show up at 9:30 am at Brightside Barbell for weigh in. For spectators, the doors open at 10:45 and the event starts at 11. It should wrap up around 1:30pm or 2:30pm, depending on the number of participants, but it’s always possible things will run late.
What is the process for getting weighed?
You’ll be in a private room with one other person. Take off whatever level of clothing you’re comfortable with. If you don't want to know how much you weigh, you can keep your eyes closed.
(Alternatively, you can opt to not weigh in at all, however, this option would disqualify you from getting an actual score, as bodyweight is needed for the calculation. But it’s okay with us if you just lift for fun or try for a personal PR! We're happy to cheer for you whether you're "competing" for a score or not.)
How much is the entry fee?
$75 payable to @brightsidebarbell venmo. If you are a low to moderate income athlete and need a sliding scale entry fee, please email info@brightsidebarbell.com.
Pounds or kilos?
FREEDOM UNITS! (Pounds)
What’s the smallest jump I can make?
5 lbs
Do we have to share equipment during warm-ups?
Yes, please be a good sport and buddy up with some folks who are opening around the same amount as you.
What are the prizes?
No cash prizes since the event is a fundraiser. However, the winners will receive some small TBD tokens signifying their deadlifting prowess.
What are the categories one can compete in?
Gender Nonconforming, Female, or Male
How are winners chosen?
We’ll use the Wilks formula to calculate the top strength to bodyweight ratio for lifters in each category.
What are the technical rules for the deadlift?
In order for a lift to count, the lifter must stand with knees straight at the completion of the lift. The lifter must hold the bar until the referee signals “down” and then return the bar to the floor under control (no dropping).
What organization does the event benefit?
Are beginners welcome?
Yes please! If this is your first comp we would love to see you crush it. Just make sure you’re here for the rules briefing if you have questions!
What should I wear?
An outfit you can comfortably deadlift in.
Costumes are optional, but there may be a prize for best outfit. ;)
Outfit requirements that apply to EVERYONE:
You must wear a top of some kind - no nipples are free until all nipples are free.
Your shins and feet must be covered.
Long socks cover shins well, or even a bodysuit if that's how you roll.
Shoes are required - zero drop are ideal because it makes the lift easier.
Additional restrictions for those COMPETING FOR A SCORE:
No loose pants or clothing that obscures the judges view of your lockout. We need to be able to clearly assess full extension of the knees and hips at the top of the lift.
What should I bring?
A water bottle. Or multiple! It may be warm.
Snacks.
Any personal lifting equipment you normally use (a belt, etc.)
What about COVID safety?
Don’t come if you’re feeling unwell in any way! Masks are optional for competitors and spectators.
What’s the parking like?
There’s both metered street parking and non-metered parking nearby. Don’t bring your bike to the event unless you’re comfortable parking it outside. There is limited bike rack space available for locking bikes on the sidewalk.
Can my friend / fam / coach come cheer me on?
Yes! They should RSVP here if possible so we know how many folks are coming. There's a $10-$35 suggested donation at the door for the fundraiser benefitting the Transgender Law Center. NOTAFLOF
