Think Pair Share

Think-Pair-Share. Think-pair-share is a strategy in which students work together to answer a question about an assigned reading.

Decide on the text to be read and develop the set of questions or prompts that target key content concepts.
Describe the purpose of the strategy and provide guidelines for discussions.
Model the procedure to ensure that students understand how to use the strategy.
Monitor and support students as they work through the following:

Think: Teachers begin by asking a specific question about the text. Students "think" about what they know or have learned about the topic.

Pair: Each student should be paired with another student.

Share: Students share their thinking with their partner.

As partners have an opportunity to share with each other, the teachers can open up the sharing as a whole-class activity.

Fact or Opinion: An Integrated ELD LessonElizabeth Iwaszewicz engages her kindergarten class in a lesson about distinguishing between fact and opinion. Because many of the students are ELLs, she provides structured support and opportunities for language practice throughout the lesson. Elizabeth begins the lesson by reviewing class discussion norms and modeling the activity. Then, students work in pairs to discuss facts and opinions about American symbols. By the end of the lesson. Elizabeth realizes that students need to continue working with this challenging topic.
