We employ a number of instructional strategies in our Studio Art Classes:

  • Teacher-guided demonstrations of art processes and techniques

  • Class discussion on visual art examples, works of art criticism and art history

  • Teacher lecture on art history and philosophy

  • Student-led demonstrations of art processes and techniques

  • Group critiques of student artwork

  • Regular sketchbook practice

  • Practical exercise work in drawing/painting/sculpture techniques

  • Backwards planning for sustained, multiple-step projects

  • Independent project work with one-on-one teacher check-ins

  • Video documentary and interviews with artists; artist working processes; demonstrations of art techniques

  • Teacher-guided brainstorming and creative-problem-solving
