On March 29th, students in kindergarten-5th grade participated in a wellness fair at our monthly PBIS assembly. Students rotated between six stations in order to discuss striving for an all-around healthy lifestyle. The students were provided a wellness log that we hope that as a family will be completed over spring break. The students should document there answers to each section of the log each day. If the students reach 70 points and hand the wellness log in on April 29, 2019, students will receive an award. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at your convenience.

Laura Hagerman Presenting To The Board Of Education
On Why We Need A Blood Drive At Our School!!!
Please View The Speech Below!!!
Good evening everyone. For those of you that do not know me, my name is Laura Hagerman and I am a senior here at Bridgehampton High School. I want to thank you all for allowing me to come speak tonight about my involvement in the community, as well as something that is very important to me and I hope will become a priority to everyone here tonight. The issue is supporting blood drives. But before we discuss the importance of a blood drive, I would like to tell you all a little bit more about myself. A few years ago, I was searching for a way to combine both my interest in community service and helping others. That is where I found the Bridgehampton Fire Department Juniors Program. I have been with the juniors for about two years now, and I am currently serving as Captain of our group. This type of program is sponsored by many local fire departments and is a great way to get teenagers interested in community service and volunteering. Shortly after joining the Fire Department juniors program it became clear to me what my long term life goals were. I signed up to take a challenging EMT class that started the night before my first day of senior year and will technically end this time tomorrow night after completing the New York State written exam. After I obtain my certification, I will officially join the Bridgehampton Ambulance company as an EMT and serve the community that helped raise me. Partaking in this program has helped me realize I want to make a career out of my interest in emergency medicine. I was accepted through early decision into my top choice college, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences where I will major in Biomedical Technology which will hopefully lead me right into Albany Medical College where I will study to become a Physician's Assistant, and my intended focus will be in emergency medicine. I believe that my work ethic, compassion, and involvement in my community were instrumental in getting accepted into my top choice college. Our local Fire Department and ambulance companies are only successful when they have volunteers willing and able to give their time, just like a blood drive. And that is why I am here tonight, to discuss a blood drive here at Bridgehampton School. I first learned about blood drives through the Bridgehampton Fire Department. During the most recent blood drive we hosted, I spoke to one of the donation handlers and found out some startling news. Nationally less than 10% of people donate blood which I thought was such a horrific number, until she told me in our area the percentage is only 2. Just 2% of our neighbors, family members, friends and colleagues participate in blood donations that help so many people in need of this life sustaining source. I thought that hosting a blood drive here at school would serve two purposes. The first and obvious one, providing more blood for blood banks. The second purpose would be to encourage my fellow peers to think about the importance of donating and helping those in need. In New York the guidelines for donations are you have to be 17 years old, or 16 with a parents consent, at least 110 pounds and in good health. Blood can not be manufactured so it has to come from living donors like ourselves. 4 and a half million lives are saved each year by blood transfusions, and the number could be so much higher with support from the community. I am so grateful for Mr. Miller, who when I approached him with my idea was nothing but supportive and open to hearing my ideas and Mrs. Reilly along with the National Honor Society with their willingness to help get the blood drive started and for their anticipated help during the blood drive. My goal is to get one pint of blood from every student, teacher, parent, and community member who is eligible to donate. Thank you for listening to my story and my vision for the blood drive here at Bridgehampton School. Keep in mind that one pint of blood donated could save up to three lives. If you are interested in signing up for the blood drive please see me or Mrs. Reilly, and I hope to see you all on June 3rd.
