Infinite Recharge would have had teams score by shooting balls into hoops with three different levels. Each level gets higher in height with a smaller area to shoot. The higher levels are harder to shoot but reward the team with extra points. Then comes the wheel of fortune which was a wheel that was to be spun in any way to receive points. Lastly was the hanging portion which had bots hang from a raising ceiling.
In order to ensure that we would be more successful than last year, we built the wheel of fortune to simulate what the competition was going to bring us. We used walls to simulate the shooting portion of the competition by placing the tape in the area we would be required to shoot.
The robot was once again designed with wood, but still highly effective, able to collect and shoot balls in the designated areas. The robot was on its way to glory.
Due to the pandemic, FIRST had canceled the Hudson valley regional due to the cases that soared in the area of the competition. This meant that our robot was not put up to the test and was not able to compete with other robots. No reward was offered that year but the competition is only one part of Robotics. Working as a team and the experience gained from that year is what we cherish the most.
The pandemic has raised concern over the competition. FIRST continued to use the name Infinite recharge but has given two new options. One gives those who have the means to build a robot to do so. Their bot must complete a specific action that could be seen as a solution to a real-world problem. The next is presented by Qualcomm - a business plan that must improve mental or physical health with physical movement. This allows those who don't have the means to create a bot to still compete. They will be showcased either by video or by zoom with judges to determine the number of points each team obtains.
Our design was chosen as one of 20 finalists. Our team was then able to attend a workshop with Disney Imagineers and ask questions and workshop our designs before presenting to the final judges. It was a great experience and one that our team will never forget.
