Welcome!
In our classroom we have a great time learning and becoming a community. We follow the district curriculum in all areas including math, reading, social emotional learning (SEL) and science. Your student will be excited to know that with our FOSS science kits we will be learning about rocks (pebbles, sand, and silt), states of matter, and insects. In addition to our district curriculum I like to offer students the opportuinity to create some fun and interesting stem projects. Most are based off of books we read or topics your student shows interest in. I have a general plan of challenges I pose to students, but these are always adapted to and changed depending upon student interest and wonderings. Here is an example of what that looks like in our classroom.
We will read "The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot" which is a twisted fairy tale. After talking about the literary elements, such as comparing and contrasting this with the 3 little pigs and the big bad wolf, I give students their own little alien ( a pom pom ball) I then challenge them to engineer a transportation device or to build a structure they think their alien would benefit from . I show them the supplies they have available, they create a plan and draw or write about it, they build, try out their creation and make adjustments, modifications, and or additions. My objective is to allow them to want to think creatively, learn that "mistakes" and what we consider "failure" are not bad but rather a step or part in the process in achieving our goals. I want them to feel free to "not be right" and most importantly to want to continue learning and exploring! Below are a couple of examples of what students have created in the past.
If you have any questions, would like to donate supplies, or have other ideas feel free to share! All are welcome!
Building structures that would allow an animal to safely float / cross a river after reading, "The Circus Ship"
Building structures that hold items of increasing weight including a stuffed animal and books. Making changes after testing and collaborating with peers about what designs hold more weights and how to incorporate them.
Making slime after predicting possibilites with changing information and learning about different states of matter.
Looking closely at the properties of a pinecone, practicing scientifc drawing and labeling, then building structures that can withstand forces exerted on them without crushing the cargo.
Building catapults after discussing how people can work together to repurpose items after reading , "The Knight and the Dragon" . Students also measured how far their pom poms went and made modifications to increase or decrease the force exerted to conrol the distance their projectile traveled.
Building structures / transportation devices for our aliens (pom poms) after reading, "The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot".
Building a structurally sound bed for Baby Bear that Goldilocks couldn't accidentally break after reading, "The True Story of the Three Little Bears as Told By Baby Bear".
Creating leprechaun traps or a fun playground structure they would want to visit instead of being mischievous and making a mess of our classroom!
