Wire Portraits: Drawing with Wire
In this project, 3D art students explored the work of Alexander Calder by creating wire portraits using continuous contour lines. Students began by studying their own reflections and drawing themselves with a single, unbroken line. They then transformed their drawings into three-dimensional wire sculptures, focusing on capturing the essence of their features with minimal materials. This project emphasized form, line quality, and the translation of 2D sketches into 3D artworks, helping students develop their understanding of sculpture and spatial design.Â
Oldenburg-Inspired Paper Mache: Making the Everyday Extraordinary
In this project, 3D art students explored the art of Claes Oldenburg by creating papier-mâchĂ© sculptures inspired by everyday objects. Students selected an object and focused on constructing it thoughtfully, paying attention to form, scale, and detail. Through the layering process of papier-mâchĂ©, they built sturdy armatures and finished their sculptures with smooth, even surfaces. This project encouraged students to think critically about everyday items as art, while also developing their skills in construction and presentation.Â
Ceramic Pumpkins: Learning Clay Techniques
In this project, 3D art students practiced basic hand-building techniques by making small clay pumpkins. They created the pumpkin by forming two pinch pots and attaching them together. Students then added a stem and textured the surface to give their pumpkins more detail. After firing, they used watercolor paint to finish their pumpkins with color. This project helped students learn the basics of working with clay, including forming, attaching, and adding texture.Â
Reinvent the Mug:
Students were challenged to create a non-traditional mug form.Â
Slab Built Ceramic Boxes
Students created functional lidded boxes by rolling and cutting their own slabs!
Magazine Bowls: Creating through recycling
Students created layered magazine bowls inspired by contemporary artist Haroshi. Haroshi's work displays colorful layers and are made from recycled materials.
Cardboard Gingerbread Houses: Creating through recycling
Students created 3D non-edible gingerbread houses to celebrate the holiday season!
