All students were given a copy of this check system and have either taped or glued it in their ELA Notebook. It will be used for occasional assignments throughout the year.
The ELA “Check” System
How will I be graded?
√++ =(100) Exceptional– above expectations, lengthy, superb content and information, perfect grammar, and extra effort added
√+=(95) Excellent– includes excellent information, very neat and colorful, grammar is very good, and proper length
√+/√ =(87) Very Good- information is satisfactory, relatively neat, grammar is acceptable, or could have put in a touch more effort
√ =(80) Fair – basic information included, not neat enough, grammar needs help, too short, or lack of effort seen (did not use a ruler, not in pen, etc.)
√/√- =(73) Poor- missing much information, messy, poor grammar, short in length, or lacks effort
√- = (65) Very Poor – parts of the project are incomplete or missing, not neat, grammar is very poor, way too short, or needs substantial improvement in effort
- = (59) Unacceptable – project is missing, or over half of the project is incomplete

Independent Reading
All students will be encouraged to do more independent reading throughout the school year. As a result, we have developed these 6th Grade expectations:
Students are to read for at least 20 minutes every school night. Students will be responsible to always be reading a book outside of books being covered in their academic classes. Please see the next bullet to learn how students will be held accountable.
Students have an "Independent Reading Record" binder in my classroom. On this spreadsheet, students will keep a list of books they have read since the beginning of the school year and/or are currently reading. I will read these records weekly in class and offer "gentle reminders" to students that they should always have a book they are reading. Students are responsible to go back to these records and indicate the date they finished a book and then list the new one they are beginning. At the end of the trimester, students will be asked to bring them home to get a parent/guardian signature verifying that they have read the listed books. They will receive a new one each trimester.
Students will be assigned an independent reading project all 3 trimesters of the school year.
Thank you for your support as we try to encourage, nurture, and/or develop a love for reading!!
