“STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy" (Tsupros, 2009).
Instructors work cross curricular to develop integrated, rigorous curriculum with real-world design challenges in a hands on learning with state-of-the-art technology.

An online application is posted in January every year and the due date is set every year after the STEM Coordinator are able to talk to the middle school students about scheduling. This allows for the academy to prepare materials for the coming year. Students new to the Brandon School District may apply at any time.
As soon as all of the applications have been reviewed, letters will be sent to address provided in the application. Students will learn their status in this letter. Middle School Counselor will also receive a list at the same time. The program can usually get these out within two months of application deadline, but is based on NWEA testing dates and teacher feedback forms. Past years have been notified by June 10th.
Students receive a more rigorous course load along with hands on activities to help with mastering the content. Students in the program learn time management skills and how to utilize technology to improve performance. The STEM program takes great care in utilizing technology to enhance the learning process and better prepare students for the future. Students in the program have already demonstrated great achievements in Mathematics and Science. Here are some statistics:
