Reading workshop is a time for students to develop and grow as readers. Reading workshop is a framework for reading instruction that provides students with a supportive environment and involves them in authentic reading experiences that focus on the strengths and needs of each individual student. Students will have the chance to read books that interest them as well as discuss the literature with their classmates.
Writing workshop gives students the opportunity to write in a variety of genres which exposes them to different styles and techniques. The goal being to create a love of writing for all students. The information gathered during writing workshop will allow for differentiated instruction to occur to best match the strengths of all students.
Students will be exploring math through, Everyday Math, which is a research based program that focuses on developing children's understanding and skills. The program emphasizes: use of concrete, real life examples, repeated exposure to mathematical concepts and skills, frequent practice of basic computation skills, and use of multiple methods and problem solving skills. We will use the workshop model during math as well to ensure small group and independent work time for all students.
This year in science, students will have the chance to explore concepts such as, molecules and organisms, energy, waves, Earth's Place, Systems & Human Activity. Students will be engaging in hands-on learning to further their understanding of these scientific concepts.
During social studies this year, students will be learning about our state, New Jersey, and building and applying basic geography skills. With our hands on social studies program, students will be able to explore these concepts and create a strong foundation of their social studies skills and knowledge.

The reason homework is assigned to students is to practice what we study in school. Doing homework every night is an important part of learning good work habits and responsibility.
Students will receive homework Monday-Thursday (occasionally on Friday)
Homework should take them 30-40 minutes per night - please do not let your child spend more than this amount of time on their homework
Each day I will post homework on my website as well as explain the homework to the students during class time
Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children
Please make homework a priority by providing supplies and a quiet work environment
If homework is not complete, a note will be sent home informing you of the missed assignment. You will need to sign this note and send it back the next day
