The Regional Consultants (RC) of the Massachusetts School Nurse Consultation Program are dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all school children and youth, and promoting inclusive and equitable access to schools, including for those students living with complex health care needs.
Many students with complex health care needs require skilled nursing services to safely attend school. To assist school nurses in creating professional development aimed at the practice and improvement of these nursing skills, the Regional Consultants have established the Simulation Equipment Loan Program to make simulation equipment available to school nurses to be used in conjunction with other educational resources, many of which are available on the Boston University School Health Institute for Education and Leadership Development (BU SHIELD) Special Health Care Needs (SHCN) Library Pilot Site.
Simulation equipment, including task trainers, manikins and supplies, were selected to practice skills such as:
Tracheostomy care
Ostomy care
Tube feedings
Suctioning
Catheterization
Diabetes care
Urgent/Emergent events (EpiPen, Narcan Trainers), Stop the Bleed
And more...
Note: School districts are responsible for developing their own competencies and trainings associated with the equipment loan
The simulation equipment is available along with kits that contain supplies needed to practice skills and are organized by systems: endocrine (Diabetes), neurological (Epilepsy), nutritional/digestive (feeding tubes), respiratory (suctioning and ventilator care; tracheostomy care, lung sounds) and cardiovascular (vascular access, heart sounds)
The school nurse/nurse leader who registers for the equipment is responsible for the proper use, storage, and return all equipment back to the regional consultant in usable condition.
