Welcome to the Year 6 class pages

Welcome to Year Six! This is an important year for the children, with a real focus on preparation for the end of year tests along with working on skills that will help the children settle into high school.

Homework

Children will be given a homework diary which they will update on a weekly basis including weekly spellings and scores, information regarding maths & guided reading homework. This will need to be signed off each Friday by a parent or guardian.

There will be a maths task set on Wednesday to be completed by Friday and should the need arise a further task set on Friday to re-inforce areas of difficulty.

Spellings

Children will have weekly spellings. Initially they will be working on the spellings dictated that they should know by the end of the year. Please continue to practise these – they can be found in the homework journal. Generally the children will be given a pre-test on a Monday and the words they didn’t know will form the basis for Friday’s test. There are a range of levelled spellings so over the term the children may well bring home differing levels according to how well they have done in the pre-test. The aim is for the children to have spellings that they need to learn and for them to demonstrate progress.

Reading

Children will be expected to undertake 1 hour of reading over the course of the week. This comprises 30 mins usage on their ‘Reading Plus’ account. In addition they should complete 30 mins reading either on a given guided reading book task or free reading of their own choosing. Guided reading tasks, if set, must be completed in order to help them with their guided reading tasks in school. Over and above this, please continue to read with your child as much as possible. All reading will need to be signed off in their homework journals – their golden time will be linked to this (10 mins per signed off reading activity) Please be guided by your child’s interests when choosing texts, be they novels, non-fiction magazines or comics etc. Additionally they will have a piece of English homework – comprehension or grammar work that will be set on Monday and to be completed by Friday. Again should the need arise further literacy homework may be sent out over the weekend.
