Students in grades 10 and 11 are being asked to choose their own book for summer reading.
Grade 10 students should choose a work of fiction.
Grade 11 students should choose a work of non-fiction.
This approach is designed to accommodate a range of reading levels, and apply to a wide range of interests. Choice is a key element of fostering a love of reading, and it is our hope that all students will find one or more books that they will find enjoyable.
Look at the title and the cover – do they appeal to you?
Read the book jacket blurb – does it interest you? Give different genres a chance.
Read the first page or two.
Read information about the author on the jacket.
Listen to friends', teachers', parents' and librarians’ suggestions.
Look for popular authors and series.
Use the SAILS library catalog to look up authors, titles and subjects that interest you.
Give a book a fair chance – read several pages or chapters.
