Explaining Ready Mathematics: An Overview for Your Community

The addition of a new educational program is bound to raise questions related to why it was chosen, how it works, and its purpose. Here you will find a brief overview of Ready Mathematics and links to other resources and articles. Our goal is to provide helpful talking points and a solid basis for communicating the program’s purpose and goal with members of your community.

What is Ready Mathematics?

Ready Mathematics is a standards-based core instructional program that supports a rich classroom environment in which mathematical reasoning, discourse, and practices all thrive. Its comprehensive teacher support makes it powerfully simple for teachers to implement.

What is the Ready Teacher Toolbox?

This virtual filing cabinet of instructional resources is where educators can easily access teacher-led activities, interactive whiteboard lessons, and detailed lesson plans for all K–8 standards. It’s perfect for differentiated small group instruction.

What is i-Ready?

i-Ready is made up of two components:

i-Ready Diagnostic (grades K–12) assesses students’ academic skills across all mathematics and reading domains aligned to college and career readiness standards. Rather than provide a “grade,” i-Ready uses advanced adaptive technology to give teachers a deep, customized evaluation of each child’s needs, which helps them plan their instruction. It typically takes place three times a year and assesses skills across all mathematics domains aligned to college and career readiness standards.

i-Ready Instruction (grades K–8) provides each student with a personalized instruction plan based on the results of the i-Ready Diagnostic. The plan includes a tailored combination of online instruction and downloadable lessons for teacher-led instruction (e.g., individual, small group, or whole class) that allows teachers to meet each student’s unique needs. Mobile apps provide additional independent practice that addresses key skills.

All of the Ready and i-Ready resources were designed to work together and make it easier for teachers to differentiate their instruction, providing students a more engaging and effective learning experience that leads to substantially improved student outcomes.

Welcome to Ready Mathematics

Today’s standards have raised the expectations for Mathematics instruction, which places higher demands on students and teachers alike. Helping students with an ever-increasing range of skills and backgrounds reach this deeper level of mathematical understanding is an extraordinary undertaking. The Ready Mathematics program was designed with this in mind: to help teachers find ways to engage their students in mathematical thinking and find joy and satisfaction in making meaning from Mathematics.

Ready Mathematics provides:

  • A focused, easy-to-follow program that connects all learning: Ready leads teachers through the elements of instruction so they can follow the curriculum without searching for or supplementing with other resources.
  • Ongoing, point-of-use support: Ready integrates guidance on standards and teaching best-practices throughout each lesson.
  • Everything you need to differentiate instruction at your fingertips: Every teacher—regardless of what grade level they teach—has access to all K–8 resources in the Online Teacher Toolbox, making it easy to quickly review, reteach, or differentiate to address student needs.

How Ready is a little different from other programs

With its three main components—Instruction, Practice & Problem-Solving; the Ready Teacher Toolbox; and the i-Ready Diagnostic & Online Lessons (optional)—Ready Mathematics may look smaller than other programs, but it provides all the resources you need in a manageable package. Here are a few other things to know about Ready:

  • Pacing in Ready Mathematics may be different from other programs, as most lessons are taught over 4–5 days. This makes it essential that teachers review and plan the entire week of lessons together using the Teacher Resource Book and make daily adjustments based on student needs.
  • Ready Mathematics is a discourse-based program that uses instructional routines to help teachers plan and facilitate classroom discourse. These routines are especially helpful for establishing ways in which students can compare and connect different models and solutions—a key instructional feature of the program.
