This week in math students are practicing adding and subtracting two digit numbers! Students are working very hard to solve problems in a number of different ways. Students are not taught the standard algorithm (the way we all learned to add/subtract). Studies have shown that the standard algorithm should not be taught first so that we can make sure students have a good understanding of the actual math behind adding and subtracting.
Graham Fletcher shows the progression of addition and subtraction from kindergarten all the way to fifth grade and beyond!
This video shows how standard algorithm does not come into play until 4th grade!
We are practicing showing numbers in different ways. Mary is showing the number 921 using base ten blocks! We had fun using base ten and eating the yummy snacks!
We are also learning to show numbers in standard form, expanded form, and word form!
Ask your student to show you 874 in the different forms!
We are practicing showing numbers in different ways. Today we made an octopus to practice the different ways we can show numbers! The octopus has a number on its bow, and students had to answer different problems on each of the eight legs!
Students also had to answer whether their number was even or odd, and do some mental math using their number!
