Welcome to Week 8 of online learning BPS 7th-graders!

We just wanted to remind students that although there will be no face-to-face learning in schools and classrooms, we will continue with virtual on-line learning until the end of the school year. If you need anything from your teachers or administrators, please, reach out to us on the BPS website or at remotelearning@bostonpublicschools.org.

In today’s enrichment session, you will engage in, watching videos, reading a variety of texts, and practicing writing and mathematics. We have an addition to today’s materials which will continue each week: grade-level standards. Standards spell out what students are expected to learn in each grade and each subject. In other words, standards are guideposts for schools. Teachers, parents and students can use them as a tool to focus on what students are expected to learn.

English Language Arts (ELA)

We will continue reading Gifted Hands as your independent reading text; we will also continue with the posting of a video on the themes for the week. The theme this week is about drive and determination.” Most students think English Language Arts also called ELA is about reading and writing, but this subject is about so much more. One of the more important elements of ELA is knowledge about the world. Background knowledge fuels imagination, building new ideas and pushes our thinking. So it is important to build our reading comprehension and writing fluency skills by using a variety of information. Today we will increase our background knowledge by watching videos, listening to stories, reading non-fiction articles, and reading fictional novels.

Today we will focus on The Massachusetts English Language Arts State Standards of 7.RL.1 and continue practicing cite textual evidence to support analysis of what a text states explicitly from the videos and Maniac Magee readings; 7.RI.7 and continue practicing Integrate information presented in different media or formats to develop an understanding of a topic from the videos and Maniac Magee readings; 7.W.9 continue practicing writing by drawing evidence from the novel, video, and your background knowledge in your writing responses.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, it is important to learn about ancient civilizations in order to better understand contemporary history. This week in social studies we will watch videos, listen to stories, read, write, and learn about the geographic, economic and political structures of Ancient Africa.

Today we will focus on The Massachusetts History State Standard [6.T4a] and learn about Physical and political geography of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Science

As the environmental, economic, and political consequences of climate change are felt in Alaska, the Arctic, and throughout the world, we have much to learn from both the traditional knowledge of Native peoples and ongoing scientific research. This week in science-- using the WGBH middle school resources-- we will watch videos, listen to stories, read, write, and learn about two methods of observing nature and solving the challenges of survival. Please find additional WGBH resources at https://www.wgbh.org/distance-learning-center/6-8

Today we will focus on The Next Generation Science Standard MS-LS2.A.3 and learn how In any ecosystem, organisms and populations with similar requirements for food, water, oxygen, or other resources may compete with each other for limited resources, access to which consequently constrains their growth and reproduction

Mathematics

In today's activity you will explore ratio reasoning to solve a real-world problem. This is a three-act task. You should play Act 1 and then answer the question in the video. Next you should use the information provided in Act 2 to try and answer the question posed in Act 1. Act 3 reveals the solution.

Today we will focus on The Massachusetts Mathematics State Standards 6.RP.A.3 and 7.RP.A.3 and continue practicing Ratios and Proportional Relationships
