Week 8:

Learning Resources

How to Use this Website

This website is for families, students, and educators to use while we are all learning at home.

The lessons are flexible so that you can use them however you like, and however you need to. They are aligned to the state standards, and are multi-lingual and multi-cultural

Students, if you have work to do assigned by your teacher, you can look through the resources here if you have extra time. If you don't, you can pace yourself through these lessons this week.

Family members and older siblings helping younger siblings, there are many videos that give you "how-to" for each of the lessons. We know "homeschooling" and becoming a teacher overnight isn't easy.

Educators, at the "Educators Resources" tab you will find lesson and unit planning for each of the contents at each grade level. They are here as a resource to inspire or to use for your own classrooms. Each content area has a contact for more questions!

We ask that you just give the lessons a try, and do a bit of everything each day: deep thinking, reading, writing, art making, math, and movement. It's important for us to move our bodies and care for our emotional selves everyday.

Remember to take deep breaths, relax, and try to have fun with the activities!

Teachers, if you'd like to use any or all of this content to support your students this week, please do so!

Click on your grade level and find activities for each day of this week.

This website is about you! Send us your thoughts and recommendations about the site and the material at remotelearning@bostonpublicschools.org . We can't wait to hear from you!

Explanation of Standards for Families

The Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE) has released guidance for schools and teachers around remote learning. The guidance includes "further defining the recommended elements of a quality remote learning program, including a focus on teaching the content standards most critical for student success in the next grade level." The educators dedicated to building the learning materials on this website have begun to address these standards for students and teachers. On each grade level page, you find a reference to the standards connected to the instructional materials of the day or week. If you would like to read more about the recent DESE communication, please click here: DESE Remote Learning Guidance April 2020 or Contact us at: remotelearning@bostonpublicschools.org

Tips for Students

  1. Work with a friend or trusted adult to make a daily schedule and try your best to stick to it.

  2. Try to find a comfortable space that has few distractions.

  3. Don’t try to do too much. This is a stressful time for all of us. If you are feeling stressed, take a break: It’s ok.

  4. Try to finish all assignments (online/non-online) on time, but understand that it will take a little bit of time to get used to learning online.

  5. Check in with your teachers regularly.

  6. Do your best to stay away from TV, TikTok, social media, YouTube, or multi-tasking when working.

  7. If you do not understand your assignments, please contact your teachers or Principal.

  8. Don’t forget to eat, sleep, and exercise! Breakfast/lunch are available for pick-up at these locations, Monday - Friday.

  9. Take a quick break from the screen every 30 minutes.

Tips for Caregivers

  1. Set a weekly and daily schedule.

  • Involve your student in creating the schedule, expectations, and goals. Ask them about what they have been assigned or what they would like to learn about.

  • Build in breaks, outdoor time, meals, and social time.

  1. There are a lot of virtual learning apps available. Check reviews from Common Sense Media to see what others are saying about the app.

  2. Be mindful of the amount of time your child spends on technology. Alternate online learning with “unplugged” (non-online) activities such as reading, crafts, board games, and other activities.

  3. Be realistic about goals and expectations. This is a stressful time for all of us; it is more important to have peace of mind than getting anxious over not completing a task. Everyone -- including kids -- needs some unstructured time.

  4. Please aid your child in navigating their classes online. Sometimes, it takes a little bit of time to get used to learning online.

  5. If possible, provide a distraction-free environment for your child to work with a desk and a chair.

  6. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher/school or visit bostonpublicschools.org/coronavirus.

  7. Check out some additional tips, including taking a break from the news when you need it.
