The First Two Weeks of School
On Thursday, September 9, we enthusiastically opened our doors to welcome 1562 new and returning students to our school. This was a special first day because after more than 18 months, we fully returned to in-person teaching and learning. The positive energy could be felt by all! Teachers, staff and students truly missed this face-to-face interaction, we could not hide our big smiles behind our masks! Happy Third Full Week of school!

Back-to-School Night & Equity Roundtable
Back-to-School Night & Equity Roundtable
We want to give a heartfelt THANK YOU to the families who attended our Virtual Back-to-School Night event and the Equity Roundtable meeting last week. During the Equity Roundtable meeting, 14 participants, including 5 parents, kicked off the ESSER funds discussion and we will continue the conversation about how to use the funds to reimagine and accelerate teaching and learning. The next meeting is on Sept. 30th, 5:30PM. Mark your calendar!

The O'Bryant values the voices of families and seeks to engage families in both school governance and in advisory capacity at all levels within our school and throughout the district. The School Site Council is composed of parents/guardians, teachers, high school students, and the Head of School and serves as the central decision-making body of O'Bryant. School Parent Council acts as advocates and advisors to the Head of School School to improve school culture and outcomes for all O'B scholars.

Welcome Assistant Head of School Heather Andrews!
Welcome Assistant Head of School Heather Andrews!
Ms. Andrews is excited to rejoin the O'Bryant community after spending the 2020-21 school year as an instructional coach at the Hennigan K-8. Since 2008, Ms. Andrews has taught ELA in BPS in grades 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11 in courses such as full inclusion, Advanced Work, AP, ESL, and reading intervention. Passionate about teacher leadership and development, she served as the ELA Lead Teacher at the O'Bryant for four years and mentored new teachers through the BPS New Teacher Development program. Ms. Andrews has coached and instructed teachers in ELA and Humanities Content Methods courses for the Boston Teacher Residency (BTR) and the Accelerated Community to Teacher (ACTT) programs and taught BPS MTEL writing courses for aspiring teachers. She is National Board Certified in Adolescent Literacy and is looking forward to empowering our scholars with literacy skills this year!

Family Communication is extremely important to us. We want to keep our families informed and engaged by providing timely and useful information. The FC Committee maintains lines of communication within the O'Bryant community, and to an extent between parents and school, through:

Meet Yen Liu, Our Family Liaison
Ms. Yen is very honored and excited to serve as the bridge among our school, teachers, and parents/caretakers to work together for our O'B scholar's success. As a BPS parent herself, Ms. Yen has first-hand experience navigating the school system, building genuine relationships with teachers and leaders, and caring for all families and their children. In the first few weeks of school, students helped her move furniture into her office, school leaders, faculty and staff welcomed Ms. Yen with warmth and humor, most importantly, families reached out to her with trust.

COVID 19 pool testing for students and staff is scheduled to begin the week of 9/20. We are creating the testing schedule and will share that information as soon as it is completed. If you would like your child to participate and did not receive the online consent form through "Permission Click," please look through your spam and the email inboxes of all your scholar's guardians. You can also visit BPS Covid Consent Forms in Multiple Languages, make a copy in google drive, and fill in the information, including your digital signature and date, and email the completed form to Mr. Gazzola, our COVID 19 Testing Coordinator, at ggazzola@bostonpublicschools.org. - Create Your SIS Family Account: parents and guardians should have received their SIS security code via email to create your SIS Family account. Families access their scholar's schedule, attendance, and grades through the Aspen SIS portal. Contact Mr. Cyrille at dcyrille@bostonpublicschools.org if you need tech support.
- Communicate to teachers through Talking-Points: if your scholar's teachers use Talking-Points to communicate with parents, download the app on your phone to have easy, two-way communication in English or your preferred language with the teachers.
- Apply for Emergency broadband benefit or Comcast Essential Plan if you need affordable internet access.

TGH (Technology Goes Home)'s HARVARD-SMITHSONIAN YOUTH ASTRONET Program: for G6-8 students & their parents/guardians
This is a parent/guardian - middle schooler program. The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics’ Youth AstroNet Program allows students to request images from the MicroObservatory Robotic Telescope Network and process them using JS9 software to create their own astrophotographs. To register, contact Carmen Vega, BPS Family Education Coordinator, at cvega@bostonpublicschools.org, or call 617-635-9747.

EmersonWRITES is a free creative writing program for BPS students. Students in the EmersonWRITES program engage in college-style creative writing classes on campus at Emerson College, where courses are structured to build writing and critical thinking and to guide students toward negotiating a range of writing genres and rhetorical situations. All students, who maintain active participation in EmersonWrites during their final year of high school, and apply and are admitted to Emerson College, will automatically be awarded the EmersonWrites scholarship, in the amount of $30,000 per year. P2S is a virtual after school program geared towards high school students interested in STEM. Students will be exploring diverse career pathways through research presentations. Northeastern faculty members will be presenting their ongoing research to participants as well as sharing their path to/through college and participants will have time to directly ask faculty questions about the presenter’s research and their field of study.
