National Caribbean-American Heritage Month
National Caribbean-American Heritage Month in June recognizes the contributions of the Caribbean-Americans to the diversity and broader landscape of American culture. Caribbean American immigrants and residents of Caribbean U.S. territories are a vibrant part of the American melting pot.The month is an opportunity to celebrate the heritage, history, and cultural diversity and a time to explore the traditions Caribbean-Americans carry with them.
GRADUATION
BLA graduation will be held on Sunday, June 12 at 10am, Fenway Park (Gate E). All students received 8 tickets per family. We are waiting to see if we can receive extra tickets from Fenway and will communicate this if there are any changes.
SENIOR BREAKFAST & GRADUATION REHEARSAL
On Wednesday, June 8th the Senior Breakfast & Graduation Rehearsal will take place. This event is mandatory for all seniors to attend. The Senior Breakfast is being catered by Las Palmas Restaurant which is located in Roslindale and will run from 8:00-9:30 in the lower cafeteria. Graduation Rehearsal will be from 9:30-12:00 in Carroll Hall. Students will receive their graduation gowns & Senior class gifts following the graduation rehearsal.
COVID VACCINE BOOSTERS at BLA Health Center
The Boston Public Health Commission’s Division of Child and Adolescent Health operates a school based health center at Boston Latin Academy. The school based health center is licensed under Boston Medical Center (BMC) and serves as an adolescent clinic within the school setting. The center is staffed by a nurse practitioner credentialed through BMC, as well as a mental health clinician and an administrative assistant.
We are pleased to now be able to offer the Covid 19 vaccine at BLA.
Students can receive their first, second, or booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

Middle School Updates and Information
TAG I ALERTA 2021
We hope you and your families are safe and healthy during these challenging times for both students and staff alike.
We are glad to announce that this summer, our program will run in-person from July 5th-August 5th, Monday-Friday 9AM-3PM. We will be serving BPS Latinx, Multilingual, and English Learner students from grades 5 - 8 (rising 6th - rising 9th grades in Fall 2022). We are free to all BPS students, and we will offer project-based classes in Math and English, as well as enrichment activities that may include Art, Music, Dance, Sports, and STEM. To apply, students/ families (I know there is an option for teachers/school staff to apply or help on their behalf) must apply through the SchoolMint. Our program can be found under, “Gastón Institute - TAG/ALERTA (Grades 5-8)” in the program selection section. Once we review their application we will reach out to families and send them directly our digital TAG | ALERTA specific application via DocuSign. DocuSign is easy to use on a computer, tablet or phone and families will be able to input information, sign, and submit with ease (available in English and Spanish). Additionally, immunization records and proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required.

NEMPAC has a call for Middle and High School PAID Interns for Summer 2022! We're looking for students entering grades 7 - 12 to assist our youth summer workshops in music, theatre, and dance! Interns can express interest in just one, two, three, or even all eight weeks! Interns will run warm-ups, games, help with set up and break down, assist with staging, choreography, and music rehearsals, as well as prop making and more! Duties of each intern will vary based on their strengths and interests. They will also be considered a “mentor” to the students and are therefore expected to be a good example to them throughout the workshop.
Interns are an integral part in helping the workshop run smoothly, while building their leadership skills, and communication and organizational skills, while gaining experience working with young children!
Interested students must fill out the application by the deadline of JUNE 1st! After we receive all applications, we will send out intern assignments by June 10th.

$10,000 Steve Sullivan Scholarship – Current Juniors
In 2009, Junior Achievement established a Scholarship Fund to honor the dedication and commitment of former Board Chair and 20-year board member, Steve Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan had a noteworthy career, working as Senior Vice President Communications, Liberty Mutual Group, Boston, until his retirement in February 2009.
In 2022, the $10,000 scholarship award will be presented to one (1) current high school junior who plans to go to college in fall 2023 and will become the JA Student of the Year. Additionally, 3-5 strong junior applicants will become JA Ambassadors and will receive $2,000 each. It’s expected that the Student of the Year and Ambassadors will be engaged with JA throughout their senior year. They will be asked to speak at various events, programs, Board meetings, and more.

3-5 JA Ambassadors: $2,000 each
Criteria
To be eligible for the scholarship a student must meet the following criteria:
Students must meet ONE of the following criteria:
First in their immediate family to go to college
Two or more languages are spoken in the household
Students must meet ALL of the following criteria:
You are a current high school junior who completed at least ONE JA program under the direction of your teacher and/or a JA Volunteer (see below for list of programs);
You plan to obtain a bachelor’s degree and enroll in the fall of 2023;
You were an active participant in your JA program and can clearly demonstrate through an essay the benefit derived from the program and its impact on your decisions to further your education

The JA Scholarship application will include the following:
Scholarship application completed and signed by student. By signing the application, you are agreeing to the terms that you plan to attend college in the fall of 2023.
Three-page (maximum) essay on your JA experience and the program’s impact on your decisions to further your education and to explore a career. If you completed the JA Company Program, please include whether or not you held a leadership role within the company during that program.
A written recommendation from your teacher or JA volunteer.
An official transcript including all grades and extracurricular activity participation during high school.

$30,000 ALKU Scholarship – Current Juniors
In honor of Mass Mentoring Partnership's 30th year, ALKU is thrilled to be awarding two $30,000 academic scholarships to rising high school seniors in Massachusetts. The recipients of the scholarship must have been positively impacted and engaged in a positive mentoring relationship for at least one year and have plans to attend a 4-year college or university.
This scholarship provides an opportunity for young people to apply for financial support in pursuit of their goal to attend college and earn a bachelor’s degree.
In addition to providing financial resources, ALKU and MMP strive to build the capacity of organizations to connect youth to a broader web of support, build on the opportunities their existing mentoring relationships have offered them, and help eliminate barriers to future academic, economic, or social success.
Requirements
To qualify for the ALKU Scholarship, the student must be:
Enrolled in a high school in Massachusetts
A rising senior (will be a high school senior in Fall 2022)
Will apply to a four-year, accredited institution to acquire a bachelor’s degree in any field
Engaged in empowering youth-adult relationship (defined as any adult other than the applicant’s parent or legal guardian who provides friendship, guidance, and support) for at least one year
Able to demonstrate exceptional leadership skills and a commitment to their communities

My name is Adeesh and I'm the Program Head at the middle and high school artificial intelligence summer program taught by Stanford/MIT graduates. We are thrilled to launch a 1:1 individual AI research project mentoring program this summer for students with an interest in applying computational skills to an area of their interest such as healthcare, mobility, law, engineering, psychology, and more! We would love to invite club students at Boston Latin Academy to participate in this immersive summer research experience. The program includes:
10 one-on-one mentorship sessions with an experienced AI research mentor from Stanford, MIT, or a leading university with industry/lab experience.
Guided research experience from dataset selection, to visualization and AI modeling culminating in a portfolio-ready research paper.
Science fair preparation: resources to advance the project further for a science fair event, high school journal submission, etc.
AI+X Researcher Certification: students who complete the 1:1 mentorship program are also eligible to receive an AI + X Researcher Certificate.

In this 10-hour individualized program, students work with an expert 1:1 mentor to carry out independent research and solve a real-world problem that they find interesting by crafting a computationally-integrated AI project. Boston University’s Upward Bound Program
Are you a BLA freshman or sophomore who is Interested in taking classes at Boston University this summer? Are you also interested in getting paid to participate in a program during the school year that increases your preparedness for college and future years of high school? Please apply to BU’s Upward Bound program here. To be eligible you must live in one of the following neighborhoods: Roxbury, Mattapan, Dorchester or East Boston.
The Artemis Project is a five-week summer program that introduces girls to the creative thinking and problem-solving skills that are at the core of computer science. Artemis will be offered from July 5th to August 5th, 2022 weekdays from 9:30 AM -3:30PM on the BU campus. The program makes fundamental topics in computer science fun and engaging by incorporating both hands-on activities as well as real-world applications. Participants will learn how to code in Python, design their own websites, build robots, and program microbits. They also will learn about conceptual topics including search and sort algorithms, cryptography, and artificial intelligence. Lunch is provided each day.
Artemis is run by undergraduate women concentrating in Computer Science and Engineering who are passionate about what they do. Through interactions with the coordinators, as well as with faculty and industry guest speakers, the participants will meet many female role models in the fields of computer science and engineering.
Students accepted into the program are required to pay a $100 non-refundable registration fee.

Free COVID-19 Home Test Kits Available for City of Boston residents
Boston residents can now pick up free rapid at-home test kits at designated sites around the City, while supplies last. Each person will be able to pick up a kit for each member of their immediate household per visit. There are two tests in each kit.
Please help us get the word out about these kits along with guidance on how to use them:
BPHC’s fact sheet provides guidance on how to use these home test kits, including what to do if you test positive. These are currently available in English and Spanish.
Mass DPH provides detailed instructions for using a home test kit, as well as graphic instructions available in several languages.
More detailed guidance on using the kits is available directly from the vendors, currently iHealth or QuickVue.

Thompson Island Outward Bound's Summer Learning Expedition: The Thompson Island Outward Bound Summer Learning Expedition is a 3-week overnight summer learning experience (July 3rd to 23rd) to help students grow as individuals, scientific thinkers, and stewards of the environment. Through backpacking, kayaking, camping, and hands-on field activities on the island, students will gain expertise living and learning in an outdoor environment and in community with one another. The program dates are July 3rd to July 23rd, 2022 and the program is FREE to rising 7th and 8th grade BPS students. Registration will open on April 1st with limited spots available! Community Boat Building Summer Program: Summer programs feature different building projects, such as a Wooden Rowboat. In addition, participants spend time outside playing games and rowing on Fort Point Channel. For ages 7-18. Some financial aid is available. Programs start in July but fill up fast! Project T.E.A.C.H (Teen Education About Careers in Health) is a summer program for rising 10th grade students. Students selected for Project T.E.A.C.H spend 6 weeks in July and August in the hospital setting as a paid Brigham and Women’s Hospital employee. While students are being exposed to the many possibilities of health or science related careers, it is our goal to further develop characteristics of responsibility, discipline, maturity, communication and work ethic.

Boston Writing Project and the Museum of African American History
Boston Writing Project & Museum of African American History UNITE: Writing Boston’s Future Student Fellowship
The Boston writing Project (BWP) and the Museum of African American History (MAAH) will renew interest and raise public attention about MAAH through the voices of young people. We aim to create new stories of today’s multiethnic Black families in and around Boston and Cambridge. This program will support you, young leaders to help transform the curriculum, teaching and learning, and to support writing growth around racial equity.
Complete and submit the application below to join us. You will take an inquiry stance to develop your focus and platform for your representation projects of the education of Black Bostonians and Cantabrigians. A closing ceremony will be held in March/April 2023 for you to share your work in progress. All materials will be exhibited and stored at MAAH.

Fellows will meet with BWP/MAAH educator leaders to co-construct a summer learning experience for teachers who serve diverse students in the Greater Boston area. Alongside BWP/MAAH educator leaders, fellows will lead a one-week Summer Institute for teachers to explore writing through the lens of Boston's Black history.
Part Two: School Year Follow-Up 2022/2023 ($500 Stipend)
During the 2022-2023 school year, student fellows will participate in monthly writing response groups with Summer Institute teachers and BWP/MAAH educator leaders. Our meetings will culminate with an exhibit reflecting our work hosted at MAAH during March/April 2023.
The Boston Writing Project/Museum of African American History's Writing Boston's Future Teacher Fellowship
The Boston Writing Project (BWP) is partnering with the Museum of African American History (MAAH) to renew interest and raise public attention about MAAH and engage the community, especially BIPOC youth, with MAAH as a site for public education. We aim to resuscitate the spirit and create new stories of today’s multiethnic Black families who are actively pursuing their civic duties in and around the Greater Boston area in this post-George Floyd era. The BWP and MAAH partnership takes a youth-centered, inquiry stance built upon a reparative, liberatory justice framework. We will partner to restore, nourish, uplift, and learn alongside/from BIPOC students in Boston and Cambridge. This program will support young leaders as we collaboratively work to humanize and transform the curriculum/teaching and learning, supporting writing growth around racial equity issues through understanding the past, analyzing our present, and preparing for an anti-racist, humanistic, civic-oriented future.
Selected teacher fellows will participate in a week long Summer Institute designed and facilitated by local high school students and BWP/MAAH educator leaders to explore writing through the lens of Boston's Black history. Teacher fellows will learn about the education of Black Bostonians in the past to rethink the art of teaching writing.
