Research and lived experience indicate that having a mentor in your first years of leading a school promotes increased leader growth, school stability and longevity. The New Leader Mentor Program pairs first and second year BPS leaders (first and second year school leaders and administrative team members) with experienced BPS leaders who provide ongoing and on-demand support throughout the year as a complement to the professional development that new school leaders receive. In addition, we aim to develop and engage mentors to contribute to their growth and leverage their knowledge, skill and expertise through the district.
Mentors are expected to provide both proactive and reactive support for new school leaders. They are intended to be a key means of support in setting new school leaders for success throughout the year while also being available to help when crises arise. When a leader completes their first two years of leadership in Boston Public Schools, they should cite their mentor as one of the top three most important supports that promoted their success in the first two years.
Your mentor is a strong BPS leader with a track record of success in creating safe, sustaining environments where all students have growing access to opportunity. We will support mentors and facilitate an “all in” approach to the work. Therefore, mentors should be in a position to do both great work in their schools and great work for other schools.
Mentors will visit, call and otherwise interact with their first and second year mentees on a regular basis (at least every 2 weeks for new leaders, every 3 weeks for second year leaders). Service to first year mentees will come through phone calls, check ins, visits and attending new leader development as well as budget collab/probable org. Service to second year mentees will come through phone calls, check ins and being a part of second year leader POP every other month.
