The Hennigan Wellness Council actively promote the health and wellness of all Hennigan students to advance both their healthy development and readiness to learn. The Hennigan School is committed to improving the health of students, parents/guardians and its employees and provide an environment that is supportive of overall health and well-being.
The Wellness and School Site Councils have developed and approved a policy that would decrease the consumption of unhealthy foods, snacks, and beverages during the school day. All snack foods brought into the school (by students or staff) shall be healthy. The new policy prohibits the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, candy and unhealthy snacks (chips/cookies) during the school day. We feel this policy is critically important as research shows that consumption of sugary soft drinks alone is directly linked to the nationwide obesity problem. We hope that these measures can begin to combat the problem of overweight and obesity here at the Hennigan School. Please keep this policy in mind when planning and packing your child’s food for the day.
Poor eating habits can negatively affect children’s health and their ability to learn. This policy will also help children gain a better understanding of healthful eating and improve their overall well-being. Research shows that teachers and school staff can positively shape students’ food preferences and eating habits by supporting healthy food policies and role modeling healthy habits.
