Welcome to Dearborn Stem Academy,

My name is Marie-Gessy Exantus

I will be your child’s school nurse in the upcoming school year 2020-2021. I am excited to meet your child and provide them with the support/care they need. As a BPS nurse, our mission is to foster growth and development by promoting health and wellness and to provide for the health and safety of every student. Some of the work I do as a school nurse include providing emergency care, administering medications, helping families meet immunization compliance and addressing physical, mental, emotional and social health needs of our students, in order to support their achievement in the learning process. Throughout the year, I will also perform screenings that include vision, hearing and body mass index. When done, I will send out letters that require follow up. My office is open all school year for students and their families for guidance/support and any help needed concerning medical issues. Please feel free to reach me at the school if you have any questions. Below, I have created a back-to-school checklist that will help me care for your child.

For All Parents/Caregivers

Review hygiene tips to prevent the spread of infections.

Establish a bedtime and wake-up time to ensure adequate and consistent sleep.

Eat breakfast each day at home or at school.

Help make appropriate clothing choices, e.g., wear comfortable and safe shoes.

Know the specialized instructional support personnel available to your child including the school nurse and school counselors.

Know your school’s policy regarding when to keep a sick child home and make arrangements for sick child care. Please refer to Welcome letter from BPS Health Services

Bring current, signed healthcare provider orders for treatments and all medications to be given

at school. Bring the medical supplies and medication in the original container.

Together with the school nurse and other appropriate school officials, develop an individualized

healthcare plan or other educational plan as needed, e.g., 504 and IEP.

Give permission for the school nurse to communicate with your family’s healthcare provider.

Provide parent/caregiver contact information and update the school with any changes.

Make sure your child’s medication and/or medical devices, e.g., epinephrine auto-injectors,

asthma inhalers, and insulin, will be readily available in an emergency. Provide to school nurse at

beginning of school year. Please include healthcare provider
