Summer Musical

Grades 8-12


“Once on This Island," directed by Stephanie Fredericks

July 8th - July 19th (Students must participate in both weeks)

      • Mondays - Fridays

Week Two:

      • Overnight on Thompson Island

The BPS Summer Musical provides students in grades 7 through 12th with an opportunity to produce a semi-staged production of “Once on This Island," directed by BPS Drama Teacher, Stephanie Fredericks. *Audition Required

*For the audition, you will be asked to sing your best 32 bars and read lines from the play. Download the reading, select a character, and give it your best!

Auditions will take place on May 20th 4-6pm OR Wednesday, May 22nd 4-6:00pm.

Modern Band

Grades 3-7

Modern Band at Roland Hayes with Daniel DeHart

July 8th-July 12th

      • 8AM to 12:30PM at Roland Hayes in Roxbury Crossing
        • 55 Malcolm X Blvd, Roxbury Crossing, MA 02120

Modern Band is perfect for young BPS musicians interested in developing their musical skills and connecting with fellow BPS youth musicians. This is open to guitarist, electric bassist, ukulele players, keyboard players, percussionist, wind or brass players. Repertoire will include popular, jazz, and funk music. The week will conclude with a performance featuring all of our youth musicians and teachers.

Chamber Strings is perfect for young BPS string musicians interested in developing their musical skills and connecting with fellow BPS youth musicians. This is open to violin, viola, cello or string bass players. The week will conclude with a performance featuring all of our youth musicians and teachers at Roland Hayes in Roxbury.

Performers of all backgrounds, experience and abilities are invited to join us for Summer Stage Dance! Our dance intensive includes body conditioning and choreography designed to bring out the best in everyone. This opportunity is open to students in grades 8-12.

Advanced Strings

Grades 8-12

Chamber Strings on Thompson Island

July 15th - July 19th

      • Overnight on Thompson Island

Advanced string players in BPS middle and high schools will take part in chamber music rehearsals, developing advanced chamber music skills and building lasting friendships as they spend 5 days and 4 nights on an overnight intensive on Thompson Island. This opportunity is open to students in grades 8-12.

Film

In this class, students will bring creativity to life in a fun, collaborative and exciting environment. They will learn skills in scriptwriting, storyboard sketching, improvisation and camera skills. Together they will write, shoot and edit a film in a genre of their choosing and edit their project together using the professional editing software Adobe Premiere. This opportunity is open to students in grades 6-8 and is in collaboration with the Filmmakers Collaborative.

All Final Projects are Eligible for submission into the Boston International Kids Film Festival in June 2019.

Summer Theatrical Production of “Roxbury Strong: A Story of Resilience”

June 25 - August 9th (Seven Weeks)

      • 3 evenings per week, for 7-10 students
      • Participants will receive a $450 stipend to take part in all seven weeks.

AUDITION NOTICE

Dialogues on Diversity, a nationally touring social justice and diversity awareness theater company, is holding auditions for 7 to 10 High School age actors to take part in a unique summer intern/performance program.

Participants will take part in re-creating an original play about the neighborhood of Roxbury, Ma. “Roxbury Strong: A Story of Resilience”.

This 7-week program will give actors the opportunity to not just act but learn the history of the vital and diverse area of Boston, but also attend lectures in theater at Bunker Hill Community College and tour The National Center for African American Artists.

Program will culminate with multiple performances in and around Boston in early August.

If chosen to participate cast members will be paid a stipend of at least $450.00 for participation.

Rehearsals will begin the week of June 25th. Cast will meet 3 days a week in the evenings until premier in August.
