Equitable Literacy Module: Complex & Enabling Texts (Elementary & Secondary Cohorts)

Description: In this course, participants will explore the work of Dr. Alfred Tatum. In his 2009 book Reading for their Life, Dr. Tatum argues that traditional reading strategies fail to engage African-American male students with meaningful texts that could potentially make a positive difference in their lives. Tatum coined the term enabling texts to describe texts that encourage and empower young men to take action in their own lives and the lives of others (Tatum, 2009). While Dr. Tatum's research is based on his work with African-American adolescent males, the practices he promotes are elements of strong literacy instruction and can be applied to any student demographic. Dr. Tatum's work speaks to a wider range of students who may be disengaged or otherwise have had their intellectual capacity ignored and under-valued. Dr. Alfred Tatum's research, including his 2021 book, Teaching Black Boys in the Elementary Grades: Advanced Disciplinary Reading and Writing to Secure Their Futures, are foundational for this course. Participants will plan, facilitate, and reflect upon instruction that applies the content of this course.
