Joining Our Team
Joining Our Team
We welcome new athletes of all abilities each season (fall cross-country, winter indoor track, spring outdoor track).
In order to be eligible to participate on the team in any season, all new and returning athletes must do the following before each season:
COMPLETE THE BLS SPORTS REGISTRATION FORM ONLINE (we will update this website with the current link to sign up before each new season).
OBTAIN SPORTS CLEARANCE from the school nurses PRIOR to the start date of the first practice of the season.
This is a requirement set by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), and unfortunately there are no exceptions. We (along with all other schools in the state) abide by their rules, so you cannot participate if you have not been cleared.
Note that if you were cleared by the nurse to participate in a previous season of BLS sports, this does NOT qualify you to participate this fall. All athletes must be cleared by the nurses at the beginning of EACH SEASON in order to participate in any sport, as required by the MIAA.
Other Notes about Nurse's Clearances:
Athletes who show up to practice at the beginning of a season WITHOUT a nurse's clearance will not be allowed to practice with the team until they have obtained their clearance (due to legal liability for the school and coaches).
In the case of fall sports, athletes must get cleared by the nurses either at the end of the previous school year, or during specified dates over the summer (the nurses are not available to clear athletes the week that the season starts at the end of the summer, so clearances must already have been done earlier in the summer). Dates that the nurses are available for sports clearances over the summer will be posted on this website each year.
Other Information about Joining Our Team:
During the season, we usually have one Dual County League "dual meet" per week (typically on Wednesdays), and Invitational Meets are held on many weekends.
See "Meet Schedule" page for more details and updates each season. Some of the Invitational Meets are only for Varsity runners or individuals who qualify for these races, while some are specifically for JV or Middle School runners. See info on the Meet Schedule page regarding which runners will participate in each of the scheduled Invitational Meets.
All team members are always welcome and encouraged to attend the Invitational Meets to cheer on their teammates, even when they are not racing in those meets themselves.
Practices are 6 days per week.
Practices for each season are Monday through Friday after school, and Saturdays at 8am (unless there is an Invitational Meet on Saturday, which would replace the 8am practice).
For the current 2023 Cross-Country season, the regular season ends in late October. Athletes who qualify for the post-season (state divisional championships, and state championships, etc.) will be continuing their season through late November.
Athletes Joining the Fall Cross-Country Team (including JV) will need to begin the season being able to run a minimum of 3 miles without stopping or walking EACH DAY, 6 days a week, in order to make the team.
See the "Summer Training" page on this website for more information.
