Frequently Asked Questions
Report it (prior to the day of the absence whenever possible!) using the Student Absence Form.
We urge families to make all appointments outside of school hours. If this is unavoidable, we ask that you please complete the Student Absence Form at least 24 hours in advance and follow these steps:
On the day that the student is to be released, they must see the secretary in the guidance office, room 107, before school. They will be provided with a class excuse slip.
At the appointed time, the student will show the slip to the teacher and proceed to the guidance office to sign out.
Students who are 16 years and older may leave the school unaccompanied. Students who are younger than 16 must have a parent or guardian present for the student to be discharged.
Family members who are coming to pick up their student for an early dismissal should ring the front door bell and, once admitted, proceed directly to the guidance office, Room 107. The Main Office staff can assist you in locating the guidance office.
Please note: parents or guardians who are picking up a student who is ill should wait outside; a school nurse will escort the student to the lobby.
NO! Every student has been assigned a locker. Students are encouraged to move the materials they need for homework each night from their binders to their homework folder, so that only the homework folder needs to go home with them. If your student is struggling with this, please encourage them to speak with their homeroom teacher.
Students receive two grades in every class on their report card. One is their academic grade, and the other is their conduct grade in that class. Additionally, students receive a homeroom grade for overall conduct. A misdemeanor mark is a notification that you child committed a minor infraction of the rules. Accumulation of seven (7) misdemeanor marks during a marking term will result in a failing grade in conduct and further disciplinary action by the Class Supervisor or Assistant Head of School. Misdemeanor marks issued in an academic class will affect the conduct grade for that class, while marks issued in Study Halls or other non-academic areas will affect the overall conduct grade.
Please contact Asst. Head of School Mr. Chen at schen2@bostonpublicschools.org.
Dedicate a space free of distractions for your child to use consistently if possible. Help them make use of their daily planner to keep track of nightly homework assignments, assessment dates, and due dates. Ask to view their Google Classrooms in order to ensure they are completing required work in a timely fashion.
Go on SIS. You will be able to see how your child is scoring on their work as well as if they have any work missing. You will find some abilities to set notifications to be sent to you.
Additionally, signup for Guardian Contact emails from your child's Google Classrooms to receive weekly summaries of posts and submissions.
No homework or major projects are to be assigned for work over these breaks.
Cluster meetings are a time set aside for all of a student's academic teachers, Assistant Head of School Mr. Perrotti, and Nurse and Guidance team members to sit with a student's parents/guardians to discuss concerns. These meetings may be requested by teachers or parents due to academics or social/behavioral/health concerns. They are not disciplinary, but rather a time to come together as a team and create a plan to help support the student's success.
Contact your student's guidance counselor or the class supervisor, Ms. Dupuis, at kdupuis@bostonpublicschools.org. Meetings are held during first period on Day 2 of our schedule rotation. Either the guidance counselor or Ms. Dupuis will let you know when the next available time slot is.
Meetings may either be held in person at BLS or virtually via a Zoom link - whichever is easiest for the family. When scheduling with Ms. Dupuis, please include your preference!
The Writing Center will be open beginning in October. This is a time that at least one English Department faculty member can offer free one-on-one help with any piece of writing a student is currently working on.
It is held in Room 228, Mon-Thurs, from 2:30-3:30. There will be an option on SIS to sign up for a slot or students may just drop in for help if the session isn't full.
See The McCarthy Institute for more info!
Contact Assistant Head of School Danielle Murray (dmurray@bostonpublicschools.org), your child’s teachers, your child’s guidance counselor, and/or the school nurse immediately!
Assistant Head of School Jaffrie Perrotti (jperrotti@bostonpublicschools.org)
We highly encourage students to be responsible for bringing all items to school each day. In the rare situations when an item needs to be delivered during the school day, we ask that parents ring the bell and someone from the Main Office will meet you at the entrance to collect the item. Please note that unless there is an emergency, items will not be delivered to the student until 7th period.
Students should bring a pen and/or pencil to school on the first day, and $10 in cash to purchase a lock for their locker. If they want, they may also bring a notebook or extra paper. They will receive an agenda book in homeroom to record assignments and announcements from the day. As they move throughout their classes on the first day, they will receive a list of necessary supplies for each class. Students will have at least until Monday 9/9 to acquire all of their supplies.
If your child received a Boston Public Schools Chromebook last year, they should bring that with them as well. Students are NOT permitted to use personal computers on the BLS network. Only BPS-issued chromebooks may be used in school.
All students will receive a Boston Public Schools-issued chromebook on specified distribution days during the summer or on the first day of school. Please note that the WiFi network at BLS cannot accommodate any personal devices. Students are required to use their school-issued computer and cannot use personal computers in school.
