In preparation for the beginning of a new year, we offer the following suggestions for setting yourself up for success:
Practice a good sleep routine now. Over the next few nights, practice going to bed and waking up earlier.
Homeroom starts at 8:15 am. Wake up early enough to have breakfast, stretch, exercise, or meditate and organize your materials for the day. Try to log on 5 minutes early in case there are any technical difficulties.
Get organized. If possible, designate one space you will use for live classes each day. Be sure that it has room to lay out your materials and is free from distractions. Headphones are not required, but may help students focus by filtering outside noises.
To learn how to navigate Google Classroom, view this video tutorial: Parents Guide to Google Classroom 2020 or the BPS reference sheet How to Access Google Classroom from Home.
Set yourself up:
sitting up somewhere that is quiet and without distractions
with the material and supplies, you will need for each class
Log in to Clever
Join class a few minutes before start time*
Rename yourself to show your first and last name
In the box that has your face in it, click the three dots in the top right corner and select “Rename” and type in your full name
Have your camera on** - make sure:
your face is visible
you are dressed appropriately
your background is school appropriate
your facial expressions and physical gestures are appropriate and respectful
We recommend hiding your self-view. It can be distracting!
In the box that has your face in it, click the three dots in the top right corner and select “Hide Self-View”
Keep your microphone muted unless you are called on or asked to unmute
(you can temporarily unmute by holding down the space bar while you talk)
Use chat only as directed - stay on topic and school appropriate
When speaking:
wait your turn
stay on topic
don’t say things you wouldn’t say in an actual classroom
Be respectful of everyone on the call
Do NOT share ZOOM links or passwords with anyone
Do NOT record or photograph any portion of an online class - this is a school-wide mandate and any infraction will carry heavy consequences
You are welcome to have a water bottle with you during Zoom calls but save eating for breaks and lunchtime as it can be a distraction to you and others.
* Tardiness to online classes will affect classroom conduct grades
** Please private message your teacher using the chat or email if you are having
difficulty with your camera or microphone
***Please reach out to your teacher if you are tardy
