KINDERGARTEN - We have been working through different types of play! Each week, we participate in imaginative play activities alone or together, and then share our play activities out loud.
Your child should have time to participate in imagination play, with no technology, every day. Imagination play helps a child develop decision making, self-esteem, and creativity. Children do not need fancy toys to have imagination play. We are practicing playing with basic household items and simple toys.
We are now working on physical play, where we play games that use our whole bodies. We are practicing mirroring and matching each others' body movements and facial expressions. We play in pairs, small groups, and as a whole class. We also perform our pairings in front of each other.
1ST AND 2ND GRADE - We are working on Community and exploring values. We are making a play out of a story called The Rainbow Fish, while we explore different communities and what they believe in. We are choosing characters and developing their characterization during rehearsals. We are writing lines and rehearsing our performances.
3RD AND 4TH GRADE - We took a step back to learn about how to make plays on zoom. We are having a guest artist, Miss Money!, who made her play into a zoom performance. We are learning tips and tricks to the three stages of drama work: creating, rehearsing and performing. We have practiced monologues (performing alone), scene partners (working with one partner), and whole groups.
5TH AND 6TH GRADE - We are studying solo performance and spoken word / poetry slam! First, we are looking at award winning examples from young people, then we are writing, rehearsing and performing our own. We might even have a contest! Spoken Word Poetry is poetry written with or without rhyme, to send a message, plea to an audience, or expose an issue or big feeling. Our students have a lot to say! We are now working on Responding to Artistic Work. We want to be able to watch each other's performances with a critical eye.
KINDERGARDEN - We have been working through different types of play!
1ST AND 2ND GRADE - We have just finished our unit on Story Drama, where we acted out real and imaginary stories with our bodies and voices. Now, we are studing Community and making a play out of a story called The Rainbow Fish, while we explore different communities and their values.
3RD AND 4TH GRADE - We are building our Ensemble Skills by learning how to make short plays and on zoom. We are creating plays that have a shared Theme. Our plays have a Beginning, MIddle and End. They have Characters with real names. We are creating Lines that the characters say. We will start Rehearsal soon!
5TH AND 6TH GRADE - We are studying the musical "Hamilton," and how art can create social change. We are using an online program called EduHam. We are writing our own hip-hip musical lyrics about things that are important to us and learning how to share our art work while we are creating it, instead of waiting for it to be "finished" or "perfect."
---------------------------
Hello!
On this last day of school, I wanted to wish you a wonderful summer. This year has been challenging but we have all learned so much. The biggest thing I have learned is how important it is to teach our kids skills for healthy living in mind, body and spirit. I hope you have a wonderful summer!
I will miss you and can't wait for the new school year to begin. Please reach out over the summer. Though I won't be checking all these communication platforms, I will be checking my email at mpeters2@bostonpublicschools.org as well as the google chat.
I want to encourage students to continue online learning this summer. If you have any questions, please ask me. All summer programming will be run from July 6- August 7th. We hope you will take advantage of the great learning and enrichment this summer with your own Adams School! It is a rare that kids gets to do summer school with the teachers they already know, so take advantage. It will be a fun summer!
Love, Ms. Peters
Some students in the 4th and 5th grade playwriting class are behind on their work.
This has been a very challenging time for all of us. If you are behind on your work, but still want to do some creative writing, just start back where you left off and do the assignments! I am very proud of Mariacamilla, Fransheska, Anwar, Akram, Mattia and so many other kiddos who have been working on their plays!
Wouldn't it be cool if we could start off the school year with playreadings of your plays?!
Yeah !
Let's practice some dialogue back and forth using words we know to form sentences. Let's have a conversation. (This is what we did in the zoom)
PERSON 1: How are you today?
PERSON 2: I am fine, how are you?
1: I am tired.
2: Why?
1: I didn't get any sleep.
2: Oh no! That's bad.
1: Did you sleep good?
2: Yes. Do you want to get some breakfast?
1: Yes!
2: Where should we go?
1: What should we eat?
2: I don't know.
1: Do you want to be my friend?
2: Sure! You seem nice.
1: Do you want to go the park?
2: Let me ask my mom.
1: What did she say?
2: She said yes, I can go to the park.
1: Will your mom come with us?
2: Yes.
1: Cool.
2: My mom is nice and likes the park, too.
I found this cool website that teaches 100 of the most used signs in American Sign Language.
Check it out and learn 7-14 signs by next Tuesday to share!!

MISS YOU!
Dear Students and Families,
I am deeply saddened by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. This situation is further saddened by the looters and violence-makers who sought to ruin peaceful protests here in our city and across the country. All the while, we struggle through the COVID pandemic and the struggles it has brought to our community. This within the backdrop of hundreds of years of slavery, segregation and abuse, and police brutality.
I cannot say anything perfect, but I can say that I am here for you. I am listening. In the coming days, I plan to have discussions with students to start to process our experiences. What can I do to help? You can contact me via email or google chat at mpeters2@bostonpublicschools.org, or through this form
I know that the answer to hate is not more hate. The answer to hate must be love. We must teach each other, our children, our brothers and sisters, our students and co-workers, our bosses and supervisors, our family members -- we must teach through love. We must confront hate actively, we must use our voices, if we have power we must use our power, we must speak truth to power -- but we must do so with love. Strength and love.
You can find this week's planned assignments here.
With love and respect,
Ms. Peters
*****************
Estimados estudiantes y familias,
Sra. Peters

I am going to refilm the story hour from Friday in YouTube so you can see it whenever want!
Thanks for saying you enjoyed the Breathing video! You can access it here https://youtu.be/0BCn4mTpRqA The video is geared toward K-1st grade but can be helpful for any student.
How much Arts Time should my child have per day?
I recommend that K-2nd Grade students have two 30 minute creative play sessions per day, using content from this site or other Adams content, and no screens. I recommend 3-5th grade students have one 50 minute session per day. BUT with this great oppportunity of time on our hands, if your child is having fun and learning, let the sessions go longer. Send me your work!
I will be going live on my Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/mspetersdramaclass/ - watch there! We will read a story, do the alphabet in American Sign Language, I'll tell some jokes that were sent to me - and I'll answer questions. In the future, I'll go live with YouTube!
You can also log in to this document to ask question and participate! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1A2UrsWe3hkgh5brBJ6WLdMf1vnKEJ0Hu4k_TU8QDrSk/edit?usp=sharing

In general, families should aim for kids to get two 30-minute, or one 50-minute period per day of no-screeens, creative, imaginative play. This can be as simple as playing with dolls, figurines or supeheros, to drawing, coloring, or building a creative project.
Some have made at-home schedules for their kids. Here is a sample:
7:00 Breakfast
7:30 Morning Meeting: Weather, Day of Week, Plan for the Day including outdoor time and food.
8:00 Academic Learning with help from BPS and classroom teachers.
9:00 Physical Education, Outdoor Play or Indoor Exercise (weather permitting and with adult supervision).
10:00 Lunch/Rest
