For my final project, I decided to create a documentary that illustrates the totality of the immigrant experience. Encompassing both the negative and positive aspects, my hope is to paint immigrants in a more humane light and show everyone that immigrants are just as deserving of safety, love, and belonging as anyone else.
Through hours of brainstorming, preparation, interviewing, and editing, I've compiled my research and clips into a 45 minute documentary. There are 4 prominent immigrant voices featured:
Gio Valencia
A Columbian immigrant who now resides in Boston
Lan Le
A Vietnamese activist located in the heart of Dorchester
Jessica Tec Ciau
A first generation Latina, currently a senior at Boston Latin School and upcoming freshman at UMass Amherst
Huong Tra
My father, a Vietnamese refugee that immigrated in the 1990s
Each of them talk about the varying aspects of their experience as immigrants. They reflect on the journey to america, challenges they faced, developing a sense of belonging, why discrimination happens, and close with a piece looking forward on immigration as a whole. They describe the resilience, courage, and growth that emerged from these experiences. Their stories also highlight the diverse motivations that led them to immigrate—ranging from seeking safety and opportunity to reuniting with family—and reveal how their identities have been shaped by both struggle and perseverance in a new land.
