The Minority Influence on American Slang
The Minority Influence on American Slang
How does language shape our understanding of identity?
In a country as diverse as this one, how have ethnic minority groups influenced our culture?
How can their often-overlooked role be properly appreciated?
These were some of the questions that inspired this Capstone project, which is dedicated to unveiling the complexity of the (American) English language. The project's purpose is twofold: it aims to illustrate the contributions made by numerous ethnic groups to the American English language and the United States as a whole while also highlighting the integral role that slang plays in society.
Slang is an essential aspect of humanity. Particularly in the US, ethnic minority groups have had an immense impact on slang, as well as the culture and society as a whole. However, while ethnic minority groups have built the basis for American culture---dating back to the colonization of Native Americans and the enslavement of Africans/African Americans and continuing with discrimination against new waves of immigrants---they are rarely recognized for their contributions. Studying slang specifically proves both the current and cumulative impact of ethnic minority groups on the US and American culture throughout history. Regarding the current impact, slang terms and phrases typically only last for a short period of time, whether that be a few months or a few years. On the other hand, while slang may usually only be a temporary thing, many popular terms and phrases enter the standard lexicon, solidifying the influence of a minority group on the overall society. Therefore, the introduction of new slang from minorities, especially when this slang is so widespread, demonstrates the influence that they have on mainstream culture.
