Principal
As an alumnus of Benton High School, I am excited to get the opportunity to serve as Principal in the community that I have proudly called home for many years. After graduating from Benton High School in 1997, I went on to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from LSU-Shreveport in 2000 and later earned my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the same University. I was a passionate math teacher at Haughton Middle School for 10 years prior to serving as a middle school Instructional Coach at both Greenacres and Elm Grove Middle School. In 2015, I accepted a position as Assistant Principal at Benton Middle School under the leadership of Dr. Kyle Machen. During that time, I played an instrumental role in creating a highly effective system of interventions to support struggling learners that can be credited with an alarming 94.3% reduction in failing grades. This is a testament to my belief that ALL students can learn when we have a “whatever it takes” mindset and a heart for kids. Outside of school, I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family. My husband, Joel Burris, is an Assistant Band Director at Haughton High School. Our oldest daughter, Audrey, is a nursing student at Northwestern State University and our youngest daughter, Kelsey, will be starting at Northwestern in the Fall. I am elated to serve as the first Assistant Principal of Benton Intermediate. As a Benton, LA native and alumnus of the Benton school system it is an honor to serve the community that sowed so much into me as a child. This is my ninth year with Bossier Parish Schools. As a classroom educator I instructed in the areas of Business Education, Social Studies, and also served as the facilitator for the middle school virtual program. I coached girls and boys basketball for six years at the middle school and high school levels. I am a member of the 2015-2016 Bossier High School State Championship team. During the 2019-2020 school year I served as Administrative Assistant for Bossier Elementary School. I earned my Masters +30 from Northwestern State University. I am married to Amy Washington who has been an educator in Bossier Parish for 17 years. We have three wonderful children. Lauren will soon be a graduate of Pre-Medicine from Centenary College, Ava is a 7th grader, and Eli is in the 5th grade. The future is bright for Benton Intermediate, and I am honored to be a part of the Benton Tiger family once again.
