We are grateful and happy for this opportunity to introduce “Borderless World Foundation” to you.
We started working in what is certainly one of the world’s worst affected conflict areas, the state of Jammu and Kashmir, since 1997. While conducting a children-centric social-economic survey of the region, we gained a penetrating and disturbing insight into the challenges of the people living in these areas. For the next four years we worked on various need-based programmes for the local community including widows.
Eventually we decided to focus our efforts on girl children because it became clear to us that they were the most vulnerable part of the society. Another major reason that reinforced our decision was the fact that at the time (in 2000 - 2002) there were no orphanages for girl children in entire state of Jammu and Kashmir.
In 2002 we registered ourselves with the registrar of societies and began the second phase of our work on in the worst affected area of northern Kashmir, the frontier district of Kupwara. It may give a glimpse into the gravity of the situation to know that in a single village called “Dard Pora” in this region, there were 1000 widows (state government statistics).
What started then as a home for 4 children in a small room, has now grown to becoming a network of five homes across the state – housing 178 girl children as on date. We have tried to reach out to the children of the state by starting one home in northern (Kupwara) , central (Budgam) and southern Kashmmir (Anantnag) as well as one in Jammu which specifically focuses on the orphan girl children of displaced Kashmiri Pandit families living in camps on the outskirts of the city. We recently started new home in Srinagar city.
The four projects (Homes) in Kashmir region are called Basera-e-Tabassum (abode of smiles) and the one in Jammu is called Fah (Facilitate and Accomplish with Humility)
Our primary focus is to educate the girl in a way that helps them become contributive citizens of local communities and the world by making informed and free choices. In this direction we are constantly striving to improve the environment at home, health, nutrition and infrastructure. We are also always on a look-out for new meaningful partnerships.
Even though the local communities are conservative, we seem to have won their trust enough for them to let us take the girls out of the state. Right since 2008 we have been organizing what we call “Winter Education and Culture Exchange Tours”. Schools in Kashmir are closed for over two months during winters. We utilize this time for taking them out to other cities where they join the children of other institutions, learn vocational skills, art forms, participate in workshops, excursion, learn about renewable energy, meet people from other nations and cultures, and many many more things with every girl child having the freedom to choose from a large plethora of activities.
We also bring people from outside Kashmir to our homes in Kashmir to come and teach our children various things ranging from art, theater, linguistics, literature, sports, magic – nearly anything that could constructively contribute to their growth. Our scanning of the volunteers is very careful though.
Local communities have been giving support in many ways such as either weaving off or cutting down on school-fees, subsidizing rates for daily supplies of vegetables and toiletries, reducing stitching charges for school uniforms and more. At times of crisis e.g. excessive snowfall etc. they have even given us a hand in physical labor. The seniors in villages have also stood in guard to protect the organization when any incident calls for it.
Also, since last 2 years we tried to develop our expertise on other areas like Health and Women Empowerment.
We already launched a Project “Kashmir Life Line” which is mainly an Emergency Medical Service and Rah E Niswan is a Business center run by females under women empowerment.
We like to expand in all our projects so that more support we able to provide needy in the community.
All our homes are in rental facilities, we are planning to build homes in Kashmir and in Jammu so that we can provide better living for our girls.
We are looking for a long term supporters who will remain with us till our girls are transforms into a strong women.
We started a new home in Srinagar this December and looking for a donors who can support entire home. This home will adopt near about 50-60 girls and the project cost will be around 55,000-60,000 $ for every year which includes lodging, boarding, education, tuition, health, and extra curriculum activities within state.
Also, we are looking for the partners who can support our Emergency Medical Service Program. We are looking for more Ambulances in the State. As Jammu and Kashmir doesn’t have EMS service yet.
Please let us know if we could provide any documents such as annual reports or any other document that must accompany our proposal. Please guide us through the process of how we can keep up with compliances to reassure you of the just and best use of your precious resources.
Eagerly awaiting your response.
Best regards
