WEEKLY UPDATE 3/6/20

MORRIS COUNTY SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT, DR. ALLEN-McMILLAN, VISITS JOHN HILL SCHOOL

John Hill School had the wonderful privilege of welcoming Dr. Allen-McMillan on Friday morning. Dr. Allen-McMillan serves as Morris County Schools Superintendent, and took time to tour our building, visit with students, and learn about the impressive work they are completing in class. Some highlights included touring our new preschool spaces in the JHS Annex, learning about middle school activities and mural projects, and seeing middle school classes at work. This included solving systems of linear equations in 8th grade math and a "genius hour" exploration in social studies. In addition, Dr. Allen-McMillan visited our elementary learning spaces, took time to share encouraging words as our fourth graders explored fractions, and also spent time learning about their biography time capsule projects that were presented in English language arts.

6th graders prepare steam museum for 4th grade students

Through our TAKE Flight Enrichment program, students in 6th grade are currently preparing and interdisciplinary STEAM museum for our 4th grade students to participate in. The upcoming event has students very excited! Currently, our 6th graders are testing out their designs to make sure the event is a learning experience for all!

LOVE OF READING WEEK IS A SPIRITED CELEBRATION

Students celebrated Love of Reading Week by participating in a variety of spirit days (including dress like your favorite story character - see below) and activities. A special highlight of the week occurred when Mrs. Davis and Ms. Cechony visited each of our elementary classrooms to present students with the gift of a book in celebration of Dr. Seuss' Birthday. We are very appreciative of their time, the generosity of the PTA, and the continued support of our students' reading, learning, and growing!

PRESCHOOL STUDENTS CONTINUE TO EXPLORE & DISCOVER

Preschool students in Miss Walker's class read a Dr. Suess book each day during literacy time, dressed as favorite book characters, brought in favorite books to read, and much more! In dramatic play, students began building a "Pets & Vets" theme. We have been focusing on learning about the pet owner, groomer and veterinarian roles. Students also introduced two plants to their science center! To learn more about preschool initiatives, please view the Preschool Weekly Update.

Ms. Toledo earns noteworthy recognition

Last week, students in Mrs. Kelly and Ms. Toledo's third grade class took some art class time to create surprise 'congratulations' cards for Ms Toledo. Ms. Toledo, who is currently student teaching under Mrs. Kelly's mentorship, was recently inducted into the International Honor Society of Education! Congratulations Ms. Toledo!
