School Street School?

Dear School Street School Families,

Each year the New Jersey Department of Education aims to recognize educators and encourage them to become champions for education and advocates for students and teachers. The program highlights educational innovation, student achievement, the rewards of teaching, and important services outside the classroom environment that lead to student success. Furthermore, it seeks to attract public attention to the positive aspects of our educational system.

Do you know a classroom teacher or educational services professional at School Street School who is dedicated, inspiring, and making a difference? If so, please take the time to recommend this person for the Governor’s Educator of the Year Program. Complete the attached Nomination Form and return the form to me (Alison Schessler) by November 6, 2020.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

In the coming weeks our pre-k through second grade teachers will be reaching out to all parents to schedule Parent/Teacher Conferences. These conferences will take place between November 2, 2020 - November 13, 2020. The Parent/'Teacher Conference helps our teachers communicate to parents the areas their child are excelling in and to give them specific ideas of how to improve upon their child's performance in school.

This week 'Super Heroes" dressed the part as we discussed non violence, compassion, inclusivity and appreciation of our uniqueness! There are many great books out there centered around these important themes including Todd Parr's "The Peace Book," as well as the cleverly illustrated, "Peas on Earth," by Todd H. Doodler. Thanks to Ms. Pourki for scheduling these fun filled days and for reminding us that, "We Are All Upstanders!

As our first social studies unit came to a close, "Good Citizens" designed and created colorful posters showing what good citizenship means to them! Great job SSS Citizens!

Have a healthy, peaceful weekend!

FIRST GRADE NEWS

Our first graders have had a busy week. We have become diagraph detectives searching for and creating words with diagraph sounds sh, wh, th, ch, and –ck. In Math, they have learned various addition strategies such as adding in any order and counting on. Our marvelous writers have been learning craft moves from favorite mentor texts and adding them to their writing pieces. They have been using POP OUT words to tell the reader to read with a strong voice, building excitement by using ellipsis ... , and writing exact actions that people do to make a movie in the reader's mind.

SECOND GRADE NEWS

The second graders are unstoppable. They are working so hard writing realistic fiction for their stories. We are hearing about so many creative and unusual problems that their characters get into, and a solution to the problem. What is so amazing to see is how they are carrying over all their craft moves from our last unit, to make their writing explode off the pages. In math they are working on writing and understanding the different ways to show a 3-digit number. This concept will help them understand regrouping in addition. Be prepared to be amazed by interesting facts from our second grade students as they are beginning to read non-fiction stories. As we read non-fiction we ask what is this book teaching me, I wonder, and I notice. These stop and think techniques will help for better understanding of all the new information they are learning. Our second graders are also becoming engineers. They have started a unit on learning what the design process is, and how they can use it to help solve problems. Stay tuned to see what our creative students will try to fix in their houses by following the design
