What's Happening at School Street School?

Kindergarten

This week busy writers learned that when they have lots to say they can use additional paper to write more and more. Students were excited to start booklets and scrolls during Writer's Workshop. Our hallways are now ready for writers' published pieces. Every kindergartner now has their own spot to display their completed pieces. Stop by and take a look!

During math, we began decomposing numbers 6-10. This is tricky for some as this strategy, you will recall, is actually algebra! Please review at home. "What are some ways to get 7,?" is a good question to pose. Allow your child to explore this concept concretely offering seven objects, ie. spoons or Legos, and encourage them to group the objects in different combinations---that's what decomposing is all about!

First Grade

Our first grade mathematicians are working on finishing up subtraction, as well as beginning to learn new strategies for addition. Some of our classes are working on tapping to read and write words, while others are beginning to review digraphs (wh, sh, ch, th, ck). Watch out because we will be on the hunt for words with digraphs now. Our readers are working hard to be better partners. We are working to help each other solve hard words, not just tell the words. Writers are trying to add craft moves learned from other authors into our own small moment stories. Please continue to read at home every day and return the Reading Log on Monday morning.

Second Grade

This week in math the students have been learning about place value and digits into the hundreds to help them develop a better number sense and start preparing them for regrouping. In writing, the students are improving their writing skills by incorporating craft moves such as using pop out words, exact actions, and making their characters come to life. In Reading Workshop, the students are focusing on “stop and jot” notes to make predictions, connections, improve vocabulary and build comprehension. We are very proud of the reading and writing stamina that the students are developing.

Second grade reading partners coaching each other on their reading, giving them tips and tricks to sound EVEN BETTER!

MUSIC

There have been some spooky happenings in the music room! As we get closer to Halloween we will explore music and movement that “feels” spooky. Second graders are also channeling their “inner-grump” by putting on grumpy faces during the Grumpy March folk dance.

My Little Artists

Halloween is almost here!!!

Kindergarten used only the secondary colors to make their pumpkin patch.
