Kindergarten

We begin each day with a flag salute and then we get right to work! This week during Fundations, we learned the keywords and correct letter formation for p and j. During math, we moved on to chapter four which focuses on counting and representing sets up to ten. We recognized that a full ten frame automatically means ten! Can your young mathematicians represent ten using items found at home? Can they read the word, "ten," and brainstorm numbers that are less than and greater than ten? During Reader's Workshop, we celebrated our love of reading with a Reading Parade! Although we LOVE partner reading, a year long goal is to increase our reading stamina during private reading.

This week we also took time to discuss some very important brave heroes----America's veterans! We recognized that veterans keep our country safe and that we are certainly lucky to live in a land of freedom and opportunity.

Kindergarten Turkeys

First Grade

We are keeping busy this week with new learning. Our word detectives are practicing reading words they know in a snap. They are learning to use this snap word knowledge as clues to think about what word selection would make sense in their reading. Our authors have published their small moment stories. They continue to work on “How-To” books to show their expertise on certain topic areas. In Math, we continue working on addition strategies and finding which strategy works best. Students will now begin to work on applying their math fact knowledge to learn about addition and subtraction relationships. Please continue to return Reading Logs every Monday

A Trip to Boonton Lanes

Second Grade

This week the second graders learned about Veterans' Day and celebrated by writing special cards to some of the men and women who have selflessly served in the military. In math, we are learning strategies to add numbers such as counting on, making a ten, and changing the order of addends. In writing and reading, we are learning how authors add details about topics to their teaching books. Students are learning to notice and put together information the author provides for us to grow new knowledge.

Nurse's Notes

Dear Parent or Guardian:

Cold and flu season is upon us and we have already had several students out of school with colds, the Flu, Strep throat, Stomach bug. To prevent widespread Flu/Strep throat in school, we recommend that your child stay home from school if experiencing flu or cold symptoms. To decide whether or not to send your child to school, please consider the following guidelines.

Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

• Very stuffy or runny nose and/or a cough • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)• Headache • Mild stomach ache

Influenza is dangerous for children:

Flu illness is more dangerous than the common cold for children. Each year, millions of children get sick with seasonal flu; thousands of children are hospitalized, and some children die from the flu. Children commonly need medical care because of the flu, especially children younger than 5 years old.

Since 2010, CDC estimates that flu-related hospitalizations among children younger than 5 years ranged from 7,000 to 26,000. Even children in this age group who are otherwise healthy are at high risk simply because of their age.

All students under 59 months are required to receive a flu vaccine by the state of NJ.

Please forward the immunization record or exemption letter to a school nurse before December.
