Kindergarten

The kindergarten team would like to thank the parents and PTA for making Teacher Appreciation week extra special! We enjoyed the yummy treats all week long and we are truly thankful to have such an amazing group of parents! This week kindergarten meteorologists continued learning about the weather this week by exploring tools that scientists use to measure weather. Some of them include thermometers, rain gauges, windsocks, and weather vanes! In Social Studies, we completed our Neighborhoods unit by learning about how neighborhoods change over time. We enjoyed viewing a vintage video clip of how our neighboring town, Boonton Township, has changed over time. In Fundations, we are working on sentence dictation. Writing sentences with words we are familiar with; words we can tap; and trick words that we have been practicing. We remind the students that every sentence has to begin with an uppercase letter, and sentences mostly end with a period. We are excited to see how often students are now finding digraphs in their sentences and finding trick words in the books they are reading. In Kindergarten, we know that the more we read, the more we know. Rest assured, the kindergarten team also recognizes the importance of play. Play nurtures our imagination and helps us learn to problem solve, cooperate, and become creative thinkers! We had fun playing based on our nonfiction texts. We finished 'Go Math' chapter 9 today and were assessed on two-dimensional shape recognition---next up: three-dimensional shapes. We wish everyone a Happy and restful Mother’s Day!

First Grade

First graders were introduced to the silent “e.” They have been working diligently to tap, read, and spell words that contain a vowel consonant e. Our readers are practicing reading for understanding. Students have also been learning to read like a star and are practicing strategies to read with fluency and expression. Our writers are learning strategies to convince their readers to share the same opinions they have. Some of the strategies that are being practiced are: including important information, giving lots of reasons, telling a story, being polite, and giving a “fix it” idea. Our first grade scientists are continuing to learn about plant parts and the function of each of the plant parts. They also learned how plants take in water and which plant parts do that job.

Second Grade

We continue to be proud of our hard working second graders! Again this week they worked hard to learn many new skills in all subject areas. In reading workshop, we continued series book clubs. The students were able to use what they know about their characters to predict what they will do as well as how they relate to other characters. They were also able to identify how the author uses precise words to paint vivid images for their readers. In writing workshop, students continued writing poetry. Students wrote new poems based on strong feelings and focused on the concrete details of life. While writing our poetry the students had to think about the words that they chose, and search for precisely the right ones to match what they are trying to say. In fundations we reviewed long vowel teams distinguishing the sounds of /ai/ /ay/ /ea/ /ee/ /ey/ /oa/ /oe/ and /ow/ when spelling words. In math we practiced showing coin amounts in two ways, find the value of a collection of dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, find the value of a collection of money greater than one dollar, and use coin collection values to solve problems about money. We have been busy making our mother’s some special Mother’s Day gifts! We would like to wish our mothers a very happy Mother’s Day. Thank you for all you do every day!
