KINDERGARTEN NEWS!
This week our phonemic awareness grew as we learned the sounds of five new digraphs: sh, ch, th, wh and ck! Help your kindergartner review these sounds by asking: What day comes after Wednesday? What do we do with an ice cream cone? To clean our body we take a ___________ or a ____________ . When someone is starting a new job we wish them _________! Goldilocks broke the baby bear's ______________, etc.
During writing, we brainstormed lists of potential how-to topics. The responses we gathered were impressive. Some topics included: How to Ride a Scooter, How to Load the Dishwasher, How to Brush the Tangles Out of Your Hair, How to Take Care of Your Goldfish, How to Do Cartwheels and even, just in time for Spring----How to Grow a Flower!
During science, ocean lovers watched A Whale's Tale, then discussed positive and negative ways humans impact the environment. During math, "lucky" mathematicians celebrated St. Patrick's Day when they connected the numbered dots that led to their very own pot of gold!
Enjoy the weekend----read and relax friends!
Kindergarten Students sharing their HOW-TO BOOKS!
Our first grade superstars had a SUPER productive week! In math, we practiced telling time to the hour and half hour on analog clocks. We used words like "half past" and "o'clock" to describe different times. In reading, we began our new reading unit, "Meeting Characters and Learning Lessons." The students learned that reading a book is like taking an adventure. But first we must always pack our suitcases with all the reading strategies we know, including taking a sneak peek, keeping track of when and where, and predicting what might happen next! In writing, we began to write book reviews. We included details such as what the book is about, why we liked our book, and why others would enjoy it too. Our first graders are first rate book critics! We even took some time on St. Patrick's Day to have fun and create leprechaun traps! Have a great weekend!
SECOND GRADE NEWS!
This week the second grade students have been working on family heritage projects to learn about different cultures and traditions our families share. We have been learning so many interesting things about our family histories. In math, we are continuing to work on telling time and counting money. It is rewarding to see how the children are learning and understanding these difficult skills. It is encouraged to have them practice these math skills at home as well to help with these concepts. In reading, we are continuing to study our character traits, predict their actions and learn lessons from our characters as we read across series books. In writing, we are writing poetry, listening to poems and trying to write different types of poems we learn from our mentor texts. The students love sharing their poems with their classmates. We couldn’t be more proud of our second graders as they learn and grow, and as always we thank you for your continued support.
