KINDERGARTEN NEWS!

This week we started chapter 8 of Go Math! This fun chapter focuses on numbers beyond 20! Now is a great time to listen to your child count up to 100! During the next few weeks we will practice sequencing higher numbers, counting by tens and identifying missing numbers through 100. Try this at home: have your clever mathematician close their eyes, point to a number on a hundreds chart, open their eyes and then count on from that number to 100! Here's another challenge: Ask, "What number comes after 65? What number comes in between 43 and 45? What number comes BEFORE 32? Offer items such as puzzle pieces, a bunch of Legos, cotton balls, spoons and encourage counting beyond 20! During Writer's Workshop we started a new unit as well, "How-To Books." If you missed last week's update click on the link below for more information regarding our current endeavor!

Family Introduction: Kindergarten How-To Books

During Reader's Workshop we learned about prepositions such as in, on, under, here, there, above and over---just to name a few!

Did you know that Monday, March 8th was International Women's Day?

GO GIRLS!!!! YOU are amazing, strong, smart, capable and loved. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING you put your mind to----the sky's the limit!!!!

This weekend why not ask your mom, aunt, or grandma to tell you about a woman who inspires them?

FIRST GRADE NEWS!

What a fabulous week in first grade! This wonderful weather has brought smiles to our faces. Our rad readers have been practicing paying attention to the dialogue in our books. We know how important it is to keep track of who is talking, so that the story makes sense!! In writing, our first graders have been writing convincing reviews about all of our favorite toys, games, movies, restaurants and stores!! These persuasive writers sure are convincing!! In math, our master measurers have been using nonstandard units to measure length. In social studies, we have been learning about different types of communities, natural resources and recycling! What a busy, productive week it has been over here at School Street School. We hope you have a wonderful weekend!!!

SECOND GRADE NEWS!

The second graders have continued to be “Busy Bees” this week, working hard to learn many new second grade skills. This week in reading the students have begun reading series books focusing on character traits and lessons learned from our characters. Please make sure they are reading for twenty minutes each day and completing their daily reading logs. In math, we are continuing to work on counting money and telling time. Please have your child practice counting coins and telling time at home. In writing, we are starting to write poetry, learning several strategies to create poems. Ask your children to share their poems. In science, we continued to learn about plants and animals in various habitats. Please make sure your child continues to complete their work and attend all daily meetings each day. Thank you for your continued support.

Our Little Artists…..

We learned about the artist Marc Chagall. He began as a painter, where everyday objects seem to defy the laws of gravity. Cows and people float in space high above the rooftops of a distant village. We used his style to create our own dreamlike pictures.

Students have their favorite animals floating over Boonton.

In his later years Chagall created a set of glowing blue stained glass windows. Each one telling a story. We created our own stained glass windows.
