A WORD FROM OUR INTERVENTIONSISTS

Calling All (SUMMER) Mathematicians!

Did you know that your child’s math progress can be greatly hindered if they are not practicing their newly acquired math skills over the summer months?

NO, NOT OUR KIDS!!!

Here are some fun ways to ensure your mathematicians remain proficient, confident and successful:

  1. Play cards to practice addition. Deal out the deck. Players take turns flipping two cards over and adding them to find the sum. The player with the higher/greater sum keeps the cards. Continue until you’ve gone through the entire deck to establish the winner.

  2. Gather some real coins. Have your mathematician sort the coins and identify their value. (Second and third graders should be able to count the coins up to $1.00!)

  3. Encourage your child to skip count by 2, 5 and ten. Be sure to print and post a hundreds chart for easy reference. Hundreds Chart

  1. Offer sidewalk chalk! Can your mathematician write numbers 1-100?!

  2. Use a hula hoop to make a clock. Use Post-its or precut shapes like fish or suns to show the numbers on the clock. Then make two paper arrows to show the minute and hour hand. Move the hands of the clock and have your child tell time!

  3. Go on a shape hunt in nature. How many two and three dimensional shapes can you find?

  4. Play Sudoku!

  5. Pick up a math workbook designed for the grade your child is entering. The goal is to complete a page, or 2 each day!

  6. Search for math apps such as Prodigy, Reflex, Abcya or Math Playground!

  7. Subtraction Challenge! (for soon to be third graders) Each player writes the number 300 on the top of a paper. Then, roll two dice to get a two digit number in any order, ie. if you roll a 3 and a 4, your number can be 34 or 43. Subtract that number from 300. Keep rolling and subtracting. The first person to get to zero, or below, wins!

These are just a few of the engaging ways to keep your math mind working—---ALL SUMMER LONG!

KINDERGARTEN

The kindergarten started our warm week off right with a walking trip to the Boonton Holmes Library. We met with the librarians and learned about the various parts of the library as well as the many resources available to us as patrons of the library. We listened to a story, did a craft and had the opportunity to look through some books before heading back to School Street. We were fortunate to have a cool treat delivered to us by Curly’s. We all had a great time on our field trip!

This week we learned that ‘vowel power’ can help you to figure out tricky words, using snap word power can help you to become even stronger readers, and marking pages to share with a partner is a fun, useful tool. It is the time of year that all SSS books are due back to school. Rest assured we still have access to the Boonton Holmes Library. Why not "pop in" and acquire a library card for your soon-to-be first grader?

A Trip to the Library & Ice Cream from CURLEY"S

FIRST GRADE

First graders are learning about graphs and charts that represent information and data. They have learned how to read and create picture graphs, bar graphs, and tally charts. In Fundations students are learning about syllable division of words with a closed syllable and vowel consonant -e. Our readers are “meeting characters” in the new reading unit. They are enjoying our new book, Iris and Walter and the Field Trip. Students are learning that before reading a fiction book they must take a sneak peek and make predictions. Students have also learned to keep track of where and when the story is taking place. Our writers are continuing to develop their stories and characters in their fiction books. Students are working to add more “books'' to their series. In Social Studies, students learned about how our country began and about our Constitution. Our first graders were so excited to participate in Field Day and make wonderful memories with their classmates.

SECOND GRADE

Wow! We can’t believe June is already here! Our second graders have grown so much this year in all areas. They continue to work hard to master the second grade curriculum. In reading workshop, the students were able to make a plan to read by taking a preview of their non-fiction books. They also learned to break down longer non-fiction texts into more manageable sections by examining text features. In writing workshop. the students got ready to publish their poems and create a poetry booklet of their whole collection of poems! In fundations the students continued to learn to identify words that have two vowels working together to say one sound. In math the students used a number line and a diagram to solve addition and subtraction problems about lengths of objects in inches, measure objects to the nearest inch and foot, and estimate length of objects using feet. What a fun field day we had on Friday. Thank you to Mrs. Sudak for all her hard work and dedication! Thank you also to some of our class moms for making such awesome field day shirts!
