Kindergarten News

Happy New Year Friends, Parents and Caregivers!

After a memorable, and, hopefully, relaxing winter break we got right back to work! Mathematicians continued chapter 5 of Go Math while decomposing numbers 4 through 9.

We also started a new Fundations unit. During unit 2 of Fundations we will learn to "tap out" c/v/c (consonant/vowel/consonant) words This is a VERY IMPORTANT skill, one that your children should practice often. During our Google Meets, we practiced tapping out words such as mat, map, sad and sat. Can your child incorporate their growing phonemic awareness with their sight word identification to read simple sentences such as: I see a big pink pig. We can sit in the yellow bus. Ned is with dad.? Challenge your reader with these and other simple sentences. During unit 2 we will also practice and learn the correct letter formation of all uppercase letters. If your child does not yet recognize every letter of the alphabet, along with their corresponding sounds, please continue nightly practice. More information about unit two of Fundations, along with printable resources you will need during this four week unit can be accessed by clicking here.

Our Little Artists

This week we focused on creating perspective in our drawings. (foreground, middleground and background.)

Objects in the foreground are large and placed towards the bottom of the paper. Objects in the background are small and placed towards the top of the paper. Middleground...yup you guessed it in the middle of the paper.

First Grade News

Our first graders jumped right back into learning after the restful winter break! In Fundations, students have been practicing reading, writing and marking words with glued sounds and suffixes! Our readers are diving deep into their nonfiction books, collecting facts along the way. As always, the students are using all they know about solving tricky words to decode the text! Our writers have begun writing their very OWN teaching books! The students are planning across their fingers and writing ALL they know about a topic. We have such excellent little teachers on our hands!!! In science, the students have explored light and rainbows. Students were given the opportunity to use light as a method of communication via a neat science experiment. Our students continue to amaze us each and everyday! See you next week!

Second Grade News

Happy New Year! Our second graders have made many New Year's Resolutions for school, home and have set many new goals. We are starting the new year with many new units in all our subject areas. In reading, we are starting to learn about figurative language: studying similes, metaphors, personification and alliterations. Students will be figurative language detectives looking for these comparisons in their daily reading. We started Chapter 5 in math. This chapter focuses on regrouping in subtraction. The students will be introduced to several strategies to help with subtraction regrouping. Next week all second graders will be completing a mid year I-Ready reading and math test. It is important the students complete this on their own. Please do not help your child complete the tests. In writing we started a new unit, "Writing About Reading." This week the students have written letters about characters and stories they have been reading. Ask your children if they have any letters to share with you. In science. we have started a new adventure traveling to the rainforest. The students have packed their bags and will be visiting the rainforest learning about the plants, animals and layers of the rainforest by listening to several stories and completing several Seesaw activities. Thank you for your continued support. We are proud of all our second graders for their hard work and dedication.
