Snowmen at Night

Presented by the kindergarten students at School Street School

Kindergarten

This week we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Vocabulary which naturally comes to mind when discussing this fearless leader includes: peace, equality, determination, compassion, leadership, non-violence and of course LOVE! Aside from developmentally appropriate biographies, Todd Parr’s Peace Book was among the read alouds we shared this week. Here’s one of our favorite quotes: “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Here at SSS we share Dr. King's dream by performing random acts of kindness and celebrating diversity!

A BIG Shout Out and special thanks to Mrs. Cunningham for designing today's "Snowmen at Night" show-----weren't the performers AWESOME?!

First Grade

First graders continue to practice glued sounds that end in -ng and -nk. Our students are applying this knowledge to tap, mark, and spell words with these sounds. We also continue to explore place value and learn how to use tens and ones to model and compare numbers to 120. In Readers and Writers Workshop we are progressing with our Nonfiction units. Readers are becoming experts in nonfiction topics. Our writers are writing Teaching books that explain and teach about topics in words and illustrations. In Science, we continue to learn about different types of sounds, pitches and volumes. We have had a great start to our Running Start Reading program! Please continue to read two books nightly and return the completed sneakers each day. Be on the lookout for our first reading book count next week!

Second Grade

This week in second grade, we are having fun matching our voices to the meaning of the text we are reading. We are practicing rereading passages from our books to bring our characters to life, using expressive voices and even gestures. In writing, we are continuing to work on our personal narratives, by incorporating figurative language into our stories. We are zooming into a small moment, then describing it using as many details and senses that we can. In math, we are continuing to practice subtraction of 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping. In social studies, we are beginning to discover the various features of our continent.
